Am Plane Loses One Tire On MEX

During a severe thunderstorm today at MEX, an AM DC-9 or MD-87 lost a tire during a missed approach over rwy 23L today. It was after the pilot declared a missed approach that the controller said "aeromexico XXX, we saw something come off the landing gear and bounce away".

rwy 23L was then closed to traffic and land vehicles located the tire and searched the runway for debris.

The plane was then diverted to ACA, where it landed without incident.

That's as far as I know. I was at the airtport and heard it on my scanner.

anyone else know anything about this?

You must mean an MD-82 or MD-83, either originally AA or ex-TWA. The MD-87 was inherited by AA from Renoair, and all ex-Renoair aircraft were retired in late 2001. Do you know the regulation number.

No, I don't know it

I saw the plane fly away while the controller said "something fell out". It was raining heavily and did not see much (tail number).

additional data! It was flight 139 from AGU to MEX. it is listed on AM website as a DC-9-32.

Well, I also think it was a MD82/83.

This accident was ocasionated due the very bad weather Thunderstorm and winds up to 30kts.
After MX), Mexico">MEX closed runway 23L. Delays appears up to 20 minutes.

This is not the first time I hear this, several aircrafts have passed in the same situation, or worst (Remember RG MD11) it still over MX hangar.

MX F100 also lose a tire landing 05L. It is not very common but normally with the weather we have here I could not expect less than tat...

BTW Quetzalcoatl I have not had the please to meet you, lol. Since I left the A.net forum. Seems that I have to get into action quickly hahah  Confused

It is nice to have Mexicans over this forum. Hope to hear more about you.  Smokin cool.

If I get more info about this I will let you know.

Best Regards!!! Eduardo Lepe.

They must have made a mistake. AA has never operated any version of the DC-9 except the MD-80 and MD-90, and the MD-90s are gone now.

Thrust:

The aircraft that had the accident was from Aeromexico (AM) not form AA.
The aicraft was comming form AGS (Aguascalientes).

Im pretty shure it was a DC-9-32, also remember it had AM's old color scheme so it has to be either XA-TFO or XA-DEK.

Thanks Eduardo

I'm relatively new to the forums, and I am not as well versed in aviation news as every other mexican in this forum, but I've been trying to get my photos published almost 2 years ago.

Yeah, you not only lost track of many news but also of your place on APM.

BTW... Bad news on AM... at least it didn't finish as the past DCniner incidents.

Confirmed

Time to settle down some bets.

It was XA-DEK.

Reforma says:

Although, the press does not say how or why the plane lost the wheel in MEX.

It is going to be nice to read about the ntsb report.

More info anyone?

How lucky was that...The tire fell off over the runway. It could have easily fallen off on short final into a house, apartment or business. I hope this is taken very seriously.

Coronado990:

Absolutely right. "How lucky was that...The tire fell off over the runway. It could have easily fallen off on short final into a house, apartment or business."

Just imagine a tire falling down short final... in this city where the airport is next to houses...

This time it was back on rwys 23 , there is absolutely nothing back there, not houses, not factories, not anything. But in the other runways indeed you approach over the city.

MEX NEEDS A NEW AIRPORT and that is no news.

I'm glad AM is replacing those DC-9-32's...

Anyone has commented about the pilot's ability to keep the aircraft on their rear gear up until the very last moment, to minimize use of the front gear. Doing this in a bycicle is hard enough, go figure on a jetliner!

It seems as Aeromexico needs to get new airplanes. 6 or 7 new
B737's is not enough. I flew on one of their DC9's and swore never
to fly Aeromexico again.

They are old airplanes and look and smell old.

Hopefully they will get out of their financial problems soon enough to
continue to replace their old fleet which is more than 50% of their fleet.
