Who out there has ever been to or flown to/from CLL-College Station airport in Texas? if you have, what did you think of it?

Been there tons of times as that used to be my home airport when I was in school. Personally I think it is a great airport. Everyone is always friendly and the guy in the Tower is someone you will never forget. College Station has gotten aircraft from a Cessna 150 to a 777, C-5's and Air Force One Visited VERY briefly. There is always quite a bit of military activity with DC-9's, citations etc. doing touch and goes. As far as commercial service, it is nothing special but the terminal is very nice and much better than many small terminals I have been at in the past.

When I was in A&M I have flown a couple of times to and into CLL. Most often with CO through IAH. The flights to IAH usually take about 30 minutes. It's is only serviced by AA (DFW) and CO (IAH) I believe. The terminal is nice and big for a small airport.

OK the 777, C-5 and Airforce 1 are new to me. I have however seen Saab 340's, ERJ-100's, C-17's, Chinnook Helicopters, a Boeing 737 from Continental and tons of smaller airplanes (since it is owned by Texas A&M University and they have their flying club there). I personally love that airport. It is one of the best kept secrets in the USA i think personally.

Jtamu97, did you go to Texas A&M University or just High School there?

Tripple7,

CO lost their contract to fly there and is gone from CLL. However, Skywest airlines had started to fly there. they took over the IAH flights.

And SkyWest operates as Continental Connection -- they are still Continental-coded flights; CO didn't lose a "contract" to fly there; they just decided that it wasn't profitable to fly RJs such a short distance to that small of a market. Hence SkyWest took over with turboprops.

Went to A&M. Graduated in '99. I worked at A&M as well and was out at the Bush Library alot, so I was able to view planes quite a bit. When the Library was dedicated, Clinton as well as former presidents attended the ceremony. Air Force One was supposedly scheduled to stay in CLL but went to Ellington for security and Clinton came via Helicopter. The C-5's were the support crew and cars. Very impressive site seeing those guys come in. There were also several Sun Country DC-10's as these were used for football/band charters. I did not see the 777, but saw pictures and video, this was from Blair's visit. If you are still at A&M, check out the airport when there is bad weather in Houston. Alot of CO's jets will land as I was told that CLL is on the diversion list.

I fly out of Easterwood all the time. I was out there on Wednesday giving plane rides to AFROTC cadets for the Civil Air Patrol. I also went to Texas A&M and graduated in 2002. I watched that 777 take off out of CLL (In fact, I videotaped it and you can see the video at http://www.airsidetv.com). I still occasionally rent a plane from the Texas A&M Flying Club; I've also flown with Priess (no longer in business) and also United Flight Systems. I've also flown on both CoEx and AA Eagle (although I never rode on the RJ when Co had them out there).

Are you sure a C-5 has ever landed at CLL? I thought the 777 was the largest aircraft ever there.

Certainly a nice little airport. I flew in and out of it quite a few times while I was in A&M (graduated in dec '97). I like the waiting area on the departure area that looks down on the parking ramp. Can't believe its been 6 years since I was there last ....

Gig 'em.

I've flown on 9V-SPK.

It's a great airport, especially for training. It has a friendly control tower and a nice blend of general aviation, military, and commercial operations. And it has all kinds of Instrument approaches.

Jhooper, i heard that the C-5 landed there as a support aircraft when President Clinton came to College Station for the George H.W. Bush Library. The C-5 carried things such as his limos and more secret service agents.

Cheers.

P.S. The video was pretty cool... Thanks.

I've been waiting a while for this topic.

I worked for a year at the FBO doing fuel and ramp services for GA/military/charters. I can honestly say that this airport has a little bit of everything. It is a great airport for training due to the multiple approaches and its not too crowded either. I now work for American Eagle there. During storms and bad weather definately go to the terminal and check it out. Continental/CoEx love to divert there and it is not unlikely to see many RJ's parked on the ramp. I've seen 4 RJ's on the ramp, plus 3 more and 2 737's in line on an inactive runway all due to weather. Gets fun real quick. 3 weeks ago we had a storm with 5 RJ's and a 737 all on the ramp. Funny thing was, the 737 airstairs were in maintainence so the ARFF truck had to drive up to the door to let the pilots hop down.

Hey JHooper,
Didn't we discuss this a while back  Smile..Anyways, the C-5 came back in I guess 1998 or 1997 can't exactly remember. I was amazed as well but it landed, off loaded limo's and other gear, left, then returned the next day. If I was not so busy directing traffic with my split pants, while Clinton drove by, I would have taken pictures...And yes that did happen.

Jhooper,
Why don't you start a new airline....Freebirds XPress...I do not have one in my town, and miss it dearly. My main reason for flying back to College Station is Freebirds and Chicken Oil.
