UFO's Over Campeche, Mexico?

On a nationwide broadcast earlier tonight, XEW-TV primary news program conducted by Joaquín López-Dóriga showed a rare piece of footage, allegedly released by the FAM (Mexican Air Force), of 16 UFO's.

The footage was said to be taken from a "Marlin C26" radar/reconnaisance aircraft belonging to the 501th. Squadron, during a routine mission over Campeche, aimed at detecting small aircraft entering Mexican airspace from Central America and the Caribbean, last March 5, 2004.

I had never heard about such an aircraft before. I have looked it up here in a.net, to no avail. The news clip showed a mid-sized twin-engine turboprop, the kind that would carry 10-15 PAX... Like a smaller Metroliner III... But definitely not a Metro III. Does anybody know if this is perhaps a military nomenclature for another kind of a/c?

The news report included interviews with three military crew members and radar operators of the Marlin. They explained the objects, which flew in formations, made sharp turns and sudden accelerations (they mentioned from 60 to 150 knots), before dissapearing in broad daylight.

Has anyone heard anything about this incident?

Whato to say? Just another UFO encounter, which does not mean greeen guys. I think the mistake was to give the video to the guy they gave it too, Jaime Maussan.

I suspect they meant a Martin B-26, which was a WW II medium bomber. The earlier models had a very compact wing, which led to them referred to as the "flying prostitute" since they had no visible means of support.

It was a Swearingen Metro. Called "Merlin" by the Mexican air force.

The UFOs must have been a bunch of Embraers coming up to the US from that great country of Brazil.

Glad nobody was abducted.

But seriously. This kind of stuff has been seen before, too. Reminds me of a story in Pravda a long time ago, probably some 20 or more years, when an Aeroflot Tu-134, from Rostov I believe, was returning to Tallinn. The crew noticed a weird object of light over Belorussia, which followed the plane to somewhere over Lake Peipus. The thingie did all kinds of stuff, including rapid speed and direction changes, changes of colour and even shape.

I figure these things happen. Whether they are little green fellows from outer space or top secret military aircraft probably remains the question of everyone's imagination, at least until we have made an actual encounter with either of them.

Airbus vs Boeing is for kids. I'll take Tupolev vs Convair.

small correction...
if the plane was a C-26A or -B then it is a Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner II or 23, like in the picture in a previous post; if it was a Merlin then it was a UC-26C Merlin IV which is a smaller aircraft.

The first images (the 2 objects) are nothing but high-alt balloons, you can see the shape instantly, the 2nd image in the video is just a bollide burning up in the atmosphere.
This happens all the time, usually to people whove never seen anything like it before, and jump to conclusions.

If I can agree upon the idea that the first two objects may simply be "balloons" (a bit too high - 3500m - for a night stroll in a balloon, though), the other six are quite mysterious, especially if the Mexican AF statement that "only three objects appeared on the radars" is true.
If the Mexicans knew nothing about it, what are these objects?
Either "secret" flying toys being tested by the US or little green people on a tourist trip to Mexico.

However, UFOs are quite a common phenomena in Mexico. If this is the first "official" footage, there are dozens of them filmed by civilians around Central and South America.

Not a big surprise, in final instance.
