Need Help Identifying Part Of The Cockpit Of A 772

On the top panel just below the windscreen there is a numerical readout stating 6000. I think it says altitude under it, as this is shot on the ground, this cant be true, what is it a readout of???

Why are there 3 identical keypads on the central control board??? What are they used for???

Lastly, what is written on the cards on the control sticks???

Sorry to ask what may seem simple questions for some, but i'm still learning and curious to know what these bits are!

The 6000 indicates the altitude selected into the autopilot... It does not indicate the current altitude.

The keypads are the FMC's that pretty much control every part of the flight and have tons of other info in it like radio frequencies and text weather etc. I'm not too familiar with them, but I believe that this is where the pilots input all the navigation waypoints and fuel numbers and all that good stuff in.

I'm not familiar with the cards on the 777 but I've seen them have things like a particular checklist or maybe some general info.

Hey Chris, you are correct that the "6000" is the altitude selector and it is part of the autopilot. I am guessing that the three keypads are all for the FMC (flight management computer) and on the control column it is many of the performance specifications (stall speed, landing approach speed, maybe flap settings, ect). Many times pilots clip approach procedures to this part of the control column at the airport they are landing at.

Corey's right, the first two things are the autopilot altitude reading and the keyboard are for the Flight Management Computers.

On the Capt's control column it reads the passenger evacuation checklist, while on F/O's one it's some other kind of checklist, not quite sure which. Sorry.

Another thing, how many screens does the 772 have??? And i have heard they are removeable! In the term, they can just slide out??? Is this true???

The 777 has six LCD displays that are line replaceable. Meaning a technician can go out to the airplane and replace one in a minimal amount of time. Some airlines have eight displays used for the new electronic flight bag. Here are some pictures of a KLM 777 that has the added displays.

Yes they just slide right on out. All I have to do is undo a screw at the bottom of the display and out it comes.  Smile

Both Captain and F/O control column look identical! They are just the base for the notes on the clips.

The clip above is normally used for notes as 'aide memoires' for 'what is due to happen next'

The three keypads are the three CDUs (central display units) for the FMGCs (Flight Management and Guidance Computer). This computer with a double backup system holds the flightplan and airport/navigational infos. Under normal conditions only one of the computers is used which both the capt. and the F/O can access. If one fails, they can switch to the F/O's FMGC and use this one instead.

http://www.meriweather.com/777/777_main.html holds all necessary information on the 777 flight deck, and even some other flight decks, both Boeing and Airbus. Very cool site!

As LMP737 said, those additional displays are used for the electronic flight bag. Pilots can view aiport charts and compute weight and balance (correct me if i'm wrong) and stuff like that. Advantage is, they don't need no laptops as with other airlines and no more big flight bag.
