I havent been out to ORD for about 2 months now since im now working out there anymore (moved). When i was Swiss was still bringing in the MD-11 almost everyday. Sometimes we would see the A343 or the A332. However AZ hasnt flown the MD-11 there in a long time. Anyone know if either airline is still using it? Thanks

Bobby

LX is still using 3 or 4, but they will be retired sometime this year in favor of A343. The AZ MD-11's have been removed from pax service, however, some will be converted to freighter configuration and continually used by the airline.

Indeed, Swiss is still using 3 MD-11s, a complete Swiss fleet list can be found here:
http://www.aerpix.net/AP/SwissFleet.htm

As far as I know, ORD is now an A340 destination. LAX is still (or better: again) an MD-11 destination, just like JNB.

they are now using only 2 MD11's....

But as soon as the 8th A340 arrived, ORD will be flown with A330, and LAX and JNB will be on A340....
JNB ist the last destination who will profit of the new plane...

I don't think the above information is correct. Swiss will be using the MD11 to O'Hare at least throughout the summer season, whereas Johannesburg and Los Angeles will switch to Airbus equipment sooner.

Here's information from the CRS for the 15th and 16th of September 2004:

ZRH ORD 15/1010 15/1250 LX8 F9 A9 J9 C9 D9 I9 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q9 O9 [M11]

ZRH JNB 16/2220 17/0835 LX288 F3 A0 J9 C9 D9 I9 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M0 L0 V0 S0 NC QC OC [343]

ZRH LAX 16/1240 16/1600 LX40 F8 A0 J9 C9 D9 I3 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V9 S0 NC QC OC [343]

Quite weird seeing LX operating JNB with 343 during summer and ORD with M11 ...

At the moment, I think JNB is the only destination having regular M11.

Swiss seems to be going to an all Airbus fleet--how lamentable is that.

Swiss doesn't seem to ... they DO.

Already Swissair wanted to go for an ALL Airbus fleet. Swiss will have a mid- and long-haul ALL Airbus fleet. The current former Crossair fleet will remain.

Can anyone tell me, how many Swiss M11 are left.

I think HB-IWA and HB-IWI are still around, but are these the only two MD11s left? I intend to fly them next weekend ...

Thanks for the info guys.

As stated above Swissgabe, there appears to only be 2 in operation now.

The new Alitalia CEO has just announced that they plan to reintroduce the 5 Combi MD-11s currently stored at Rome-FCO into pax service from the next winter season.
This will be a temporary move in order to increase the offer in the long haul network while having the new business plan (which has still to be announced) implemented.
Somebody said that they will reintroduce the MD-11s to give back to the lessors some 767s and 777s since the Company is struggling with heavy losses.
Though this might be true, I think that reintroducing some airplanes that are still new and paid for is a smart move.
Being Combi variants they would be useful in destinations with a high freight market like China (Shangai and HK?).

Ciao

Stefano

Ciao Stefano,

Its a shame that AZ is downsizing its 777/767 family and replacing them with the MD-11.

Under Alitalia's current financial pressures, I can understand that it has no choice but to go ahead with the above.

Do you have anymore information on this?

Ciao

Roberto.

Roberto,

Alitalia is not downsizing its fleet of 767/777,
only somebody has argued that the reintroduction of the MD-11s could be a move to reduce leasing expenses on 767/777 by giving some of them back.
Actually Alitalia hasn't said anything about that.

We only know that by the end of the year there should be 1 B767 less, bringing the total to 12, 10 B777-200ER and 5 MD-11M

We still hope for a full recovery of the airline although this is still far from being achieved. Losses amount to some 1,3 billion euros!

Ciao

Stefano

Well during the last weeks the ORD flights were operated both with MD-11 and Airbus. So I was wrong, ORD is not an all-A340 destination, sorry.
