Tried to do a bit of spotting today at FLL and was disappointed to find
the viewing areas next to 9L were closed off again. Has this become a
permanent closing, or is it just because VP Cheney was due in town today?

It was probably 'cause the Dick was in town (Pun intended). They do that in those cases and when the "ingenious" terror-level scale goes up to Orange or Elevated.

yea I hope they open it soon before I get down there, as said it probably is closed because of VP. IF some wanted to shoot down his a/c, they could just stand on the perimeter road parallel to I-95.

This is last warning for FLL and there is no terror threat either and leave them open all of the times. I don't want to hear anymore with the viewing area is close either.

I am not in favor of closing down the spotting areas, but I can understand their reasoning. I think that when an event like the Air and Sea show was in town, or in the event of a VIP (Bush or Chaney) because they are the leaders of our country, and I feel that they need to be safe and having the viewing area is not safe....I understand that you can shoot down a plane from pirmeter road or I95, but you cannot close that, obviously. So, I feel if it is done with safety in mind and not with stupid code red or orange or whatever, it is fine by me.
