Didn't United at one point serve MDW while still serving ORD? If so, what destinations were served from MDW?

A United 732 crashed short of the runway in the 60s or 70s. I am under the impression that the plane that crashed was doing scheduled service. MDW was closed from 1962 to 1967, and I am fairly certain that the crash occurred after it reopened.

was it closed because of O'Hare?

The crash was in 1972, I believe. I know this because I saw on some documentary a while back that someone involved in the Watergate scandal died in the crash.

I recall some UA LAX-MDW service in the late 80s or early 90s. I believe this might have been concurrent with their ramp-up to hourly LAX-ORD flights

United operated to Midway Airport for a brief time during the late 1980's, I believe. They served Midway from their other hubs: Denver, San Francisco, and Washington Dulles. I believe that Los Angeles was also served non-stop to Midway by United. The Midway service was rather short-lived.

United has served Midway three times in its history:

Obviously, UA was at MDW until the 'official' opening of O'Hare in 1962. O'Hare really opened in 1955 (to charter airlines only). United began jet service there in 1959, and gradually moved more and more flights there over the following years. All service was finally transferred in 1962, when the O'Hare terminal complex was completed. United was the last scheduled carrier to serve MDW during this period.

United returned to MDW just two years later (in 1964) with Boeing 727 jets. With ORD already showing signs of strain, the city was trying to market Midway as the ideal spot for DC9 and B727 operations. The Midway terminal was upgraded considerably and most of the major airlines returned. United was the largest carrier, with 727 and 737 flights to Washington DC, New York (LGA), Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Omaha, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Denver.

It was during this period that the 737 crashed about three miles southeast of the airport. United was the largest carrier at MDW (again) during this era. They ended service in 1974, citing rising fuel prices. The reality was that the majority of Chicago passengers preferred O'Hare, and Midway had gained an unsafe reputation after the 737 crash. The loads on United's MDW flights were pretty low in the early 1970s.

United started Midway service yet again in the mid-1980s with 727 flights to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Denver. These flights operated until at least 1990 - I have a diagram of MDW from 1990 that shows United at Concourse C. I'd guess they probably retreated back to O'Hare during the first Gulf War.

Good summary-- but as I recall O'Hare did get scheduled flights starting in 1955.

Wonder if TED will be used to reintroduce service. MDW is low-fare central in the Chicago market and TED is supposed to be a low-fare carrier. I highly doubt it, but stranger things have happened.

Support Airliners.net - become a First Class Member!

It's possible Ted would be used for that. But not very good chances of it happening. WN and TZ would have a hay day with UA if that happened.

I think UA could clean up there with a few Rj's to DEN and IAD! Costs are low for rj departures and the added advantage of pulling off the south side passenger base. From DEN and IAD you can connect to almost anywhere in the UA network!

United also operated some flights out of Midway in the early 90s to destinations in Florida. I need to look, but I still have the old time tables that list a few flights each day on 737s - probably 73S - to places like TPA, MCO, etc. I am willing to bet that they may have been as a response to WN. I will take a look and see if I can find those time tables.

For the sake of comparison: AA operates 3 daily ERJs from MDW to LGA and 5 daily S80s to DFW. UA is clearly willing to move into the second airport in their hub cities; the size of their operations at DCA and OAK
should make that clear.

OAK: 5 daily 737/32x/757 to ORD, 5 daily 737/32x/757 to DEN, 2 daily A320, 4 daily CRJ to LAX

DCA: 15 flights to ORD

I suppose that my conclusion is that UA service from MDW is certainly feasible and serving the secondary airport of one of their hub cities would not be unprecedented.

Does anyone work at UAL we can ask. I was told by the Vice President of Marketing back in 99 I think his name was Schamker or something like that, at a conference in Chicago. He was telling me that the insurance on the jets for the airline to fly into MDW was ridiculous. I would like to know the update on that.
I know the insurance is high but is it that high that UAL just said "we rather stay at ORD"?

Good point B757capt. Might as well get an answer from the source!  Smile I am sure that UA777Contrail, FA4UA, or many of the other UA employees here will help us out.

The question is where would they put UA if they did start MDW? Concourse C is full...B is Southwest territory..and A is ATA territory.
