I know there has been some talk about building a new Chicago airport. Why not just use RFD? The only commercial flights there are are Transmeridan flights which is not very many. I think they could start some flights over there for the western suburbs of Chicago and the town itself which should be able support it. The airport has a 10,000 Ft. Runway which seems it could get a lot more use since it is only used for GA, Transmeridan and UPS

Next flights: WN DSM-LAS-PHX, US PHX-SJD. Return: US SJD-PHX, WN PHX-MDW-DSM

RFD has the runway, but it lacks the passenger facilities so construction would still be necessary. Gary has a similar problem. The other problem with RFD is the difficulty in getting there from the Chicago metro area. Until the toll authority gets around to widening the Northwest Tollway from, say, Elgin to Marengo, driving to RFD from most parts of the Chicago area is going to take much longer than driving to MKE, Peotone, or Gary. I also think that RFD's location northwest of the city is a disadvantage because those North and Northwest of the city have the most convenient drives to ORD. Someone in Lansing or South Holland, on the other hand, faces a 30 minute drive to MDW and an hour or more to ORD but much shorter drives to Gary or Peotone.

Actually I think its along over due idea.
What they really need to do tho is start service to other major cities not to airline hubs.....
passengers that are simply shipped to a major airline's hub are not likely to take a service out of a city like Rockford. It also suffers from "Too-close-to O'Hare-itis" In an hour or so you can be right at O'Hare.
It took TransMeridian $500,000.00 to even think about starting service into Rockford. If Rockford has to foot a bill like that for every airline that would decide to fly there then the whole idea is doomed.
What you need is an airline with a vision on how to make the market work and know just how to make it attractive to the alternative, in other words convenient schedules, decent fares and reliable service. You have to give people a reason to decide to fly from Rockford versus going to O'Hare.
Obviously all markets cannot be served out of Rockford but if enuff key markets are served that would suffice to make it a nice alternative to the rat race. You just have to get airlines out of their stupid Hub and Spoke mentality.
Some good destinations from Rockford would be: LAX DFW MCO LAS PHX SEA BOS MIA NYC DFW HOU ATL SLC ABQ.....Some cities might have just one flight a day some might have 2-3 depending on the traffic. Rockford and its surrounding communities can support this, they can support direct service bypassing airline hubs, you could probably do a flight to from London, Paris or Frankfurt from Rockford and get by with that.
All it takes is money and someone willing to give it a try. If I had the money, I know I'd be doing some thing to make a plan like this work.

Okay, my two cents.

Why is it stupid?

So would I

I agree some popular destinations such as AS / KLAS), USA - Nevada">LAS, DFW, PHX, LGA, etc. could be profitable. People in the city of Rockford wouldn't have to drive to ORD (even though its only a hour) and have to drive through traffic. It would be great for someone like AS to start a small hub there, or maybe even G4.

Having more commercial flights into Rockford would open up more options for people in western iowa and northern illinosi, people from sterling/rockfalls/dixon would only have to drive an hour at the most to get to a destination, and people in the quad cities would also only have an hour and a half to get to a non-stop flight to a popular desitnation, rather then flying out of MLI into ORD, MSP, STL, DTW, MDW, ATL and CVG. (of course i still love MLI and would hope that this would do nothing to harm enplanements out of there, only increase compitition  Smile). You could even get people from southern wisconsin and western iowa (dubuque) to make the hour and a half drive for non-stop/direct flights. might work....probably won't be tried tho.

I assume you mean Eastern Iowa........

There is definently a market out there for an airline....... That could be profitable to the right destinations from there.....

I'm surprised NW does not run some flights from RFD to their MSP and DTW hubs.

I would guess that the city of Rockford would have to make an economic case to airlines that they can draw enough pax to make service profitable.

IMHO, the best you could get would be RJ's or a mix RJ & Saab's to hubs such as DTW/MSP/DFW/CVG.

With the O'hare runway modernization plan, any speculation of a new major Chicago airport is just that. It is probably 35-40 yrs off at least, considering ORD has been there since 1955 or 57.

Coronado990,

NWA / Mesaba flew Saabs between DTW and RFD a couple years back. The planes used to be packed at times...Then empty. For the most part I'd say the load was around 75% consisting of mainly business travelers.

The reason the service was dropped, from what I remember, was because NW felt it was competing with itself drawing pax away from ORD that would have otherwise been on their plane out of ORD anyway.

I hope this answers your question.

Huh?? I would think UA and AA would have more to do with drawin pax from RFD than people flying NW from RFD instead ORD, I mean come on now by the time you drove to ORD got checked in, etc, you could have already of drove half way there. But that's no worse than RST, how can NW fill 2 DC-9's to MSP daily, plus 2 RJ's and 5 Saab's? American has 5 RJ's to ORD also. It's less than 100 miles to drive. Confused

RFD-DTW made sense due to the big Chrysler plant in nearby Belvedere. More of a corporate shuttle...

I remember Coleman Air Transport flew Queen Airs from RFD to MSP, PIA-DTW, CLE -- and right after Deregulation, had a DC9 that made two daily runs CID-RFD-LGA. Yeah, that didn't last too long...

Nevertheless, if you wanted small town airport terminal charm, RFD was the place to go in the early 1980s ... we lived in Dixon and had relatives in Rockford, I made the folks stop at the airport once a month or so. That's why my Ozark, TWA, and MVA schedule collections are so complete  Smile
