From reading airliners.net I’ve learned that US Airways is in BIG trouble and likely to go out of business soon. Anywho, if that happens I’m wondering if US Airways II will emerge as a low cost carrier and base itself at PIT. Basically, could it be that PIT’s future LCC is US Airways but not in its current form? Wouldn’t that be soooooo ironic? If it happens, what type of fleet do you think they’ll operate? I say Boeing 737NG!

I'm not trying to be a hater ConcordeBoy! I've never flown US Airways but I will in 3 weeks! My dad tells me that PIT is a shopping mall! I LOVE shopping, so it will be fun!

Kyle,
First, welcome aboard.
FYI, US did attempt to launch a LCC a few years ago. Conceptually it was designated as US2 but it later emerged as MetroJet. Unlike US mainline, MetroJet was deployed at airports where WN had operations (with the exception of BOS) and not at the 3 main hubs.
The end for MetroJet came when US was planning on merging with UA back in the summer of 2001. While the merger was ultimately shot down, US then considered abandoning MetroJet by year's end; however, the economic downturn following 9/11 accelerated its demise by 2 to 3 months.

Just my two cents... My carrier serves PIT and I have not seen that PIT has enough O & D (origination and destination) traffic to be a "base" for any airline. It was a good hub (far too close to PHL) but it will sadly loose many service from smaller communities with USAirways' pull back. As has been said though, great shopping and a nice facility!

Well Kyle, From another Kyle welcome to a.net. I could only dream that USAir would keep some operations at PIT if it emerges as some sort of LCC. I still think that US may pull-through and become a much leaner competitor in the market. Enjoy your flights on US as they are pretty good (nothing fancy anymore, but still nice). If US decidees to keep PIT as some sort of focus city, I think that you would probably see a few long-haul flights out of the airport - LAS,SFO,LAX, and AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA. It will then be mostly Mid-Atlantic and other RJ's and whatever the combined Allegheny/Piedmont feeds into Mid-Atlantic. I know its not a "best situation outcome" for PIT, but its about all we can hope for. Its really strange just a few years ago the entire E concourse was full of props and A and B were busy with domestic flights...and when you took a stroll down "C" you would see some B762's pushing back for London, Frankfurt, and if memory serves me for a brief time Paris......very sad indeed.

I have to agree with almost everyone else. This is not going to happen. If they were going to reincarnate, they would go back to CLT or PHL, not PIT. But, hey, don't bury them before they are gone...

Oh lord, If you believe 95% of the stuff that is posted on here then I think you may need to see a doctor or something. Most of the people on here have no clue about anything concerning US but yet they seem to post things that make it seem as if they have the full knowledge of what is exactly going on there. I dont doubt that some of the posts are correct but as you will see there are many US bashers that really don't have a reason to bash them but yet do cause they have nothing better to say. Most talk a good "game" but if they had the chance to go and work at US, DL ,UA, WN or where ever they would be like a deer in head lights when they went out on the ramp or ticket counter and tried to figure out what to do. Its a hell of a lot harder then it looks and it is not as if any airline just snaps their fingers and adds a city, like some on here think they do, that takes many months sometimes years of study to determine if it is the right choice. Anyway welcome to the family, enjoy.

PIT just doesn't have the necessary O and D support. I was on an RDUPIT flight, a 737-300, all of 30 passengers on the aircraft.....at 8am on a monday morning. Now had I tried to nonrev thru PHL or CLT I would've never made either of those flights. PIT I don't think would have enough local traffic concerns to warrant a reborn USAirways II LCC version. You might be able to use America West and CMH as comparison. HP had a big hub in CMH, then cut it down to RJ status, that didn't work so they pulled out completely except for mainline flights to PHX and LAS only. I think if US dumped PIT as a hub, they would be getting rid of a lot of liabilities and their profit margins might increase dramatically. If they were to also go with a 30-40 minute aircraft turn, they could fly to far more places domestically, get more aircraft productivity, and be a more well oiled machine.

AIRLINERS.NET CREW FORUM MODERATOR
The new LCC for PIT will be Project Roam (previously known as Northern Airlines), if it ever gets out of being more than a webpage. With US Airways cutting their PIT ops, it really is an opportunity for another airline to come in and make something happen. AirTran could decide to revisit their old focus city plans for PIT, Southwest could choose to add PIT as a new city, ATA, Spirit, or JetBlue could make PIT a small base of operations, it's really too early to tell what will happen because of the loyality most Pittsburgh area travelers have had to US Airways (this is one of the reasons why AirTran's attempt at a PIT focus city failed). These passengers might rather fly to PHL to catch a US Airways flight to certain cities. I really doubt one of the other majors (NW, CO, UA, DL, AA) would consider increasing services @ PIT because they really can't afford to, and PIT is too close to several of these airlines' hubs (CLE, CVG). If US Airways goes under, the name is going to die, much like Eastern and Braniff, too many bad associations with the name.

Hey guys---Let the kid have his fun. I am at least glad that HottieBoy1989 is interested in the industry.....just relax and have fun with this post. As a matter of fact, I doubt you are all Ph.D.'s in airline economics.
