Just recently seeing UA's expansion to HNL and US being a large part of the booming traffic along these routes via code share how long do you think it will be before US opens PHL or CLT to HNL with a 767 or 333? I cannot imagine that it would be too long seeing as how much of a cash cow HNL is for UA! Anyone herd anything?

I don't see US starting service to Hawaii from anywhere. They are still in severe financial troubles, and I think that they should keep their 333s on the European routes that are hopefully (and I would think offer the highest chance to) making money. The Hawaii market is mainly leisure travel and there is not as much of the higher price business travel that occurs on many of the European routes. Plus, United is a well known and trusted name in Hawaii (with a long history of service).
IMHO, it would be best for USAirways to keep their 762s and 333s on the European routes where the profit potential is higher.

Just wondering, how do you know HNL is a UA cash cow? From what I understand, Aloha and Hawaiian are the only ones that turn profits on HNL flights, as HNL flights for the others are filled to the brim with sale fares and frequent flier members burning miles.

LOL.....(just kidding) I don't think we will ever see a scheduled US service to the islands.

Well there are several reasons I know this but the most basic is that an airline doesn't expand into an unprofitable market, and UA is expanding the hell out of HNL. United has shown in the past that they will drop unprofitable routes. Another thing you have to remember is that most major carriers make the bulk of their money on cargo. I don't know who you herd that they are filled to the brim with sale fares and mileage tickets but it doesn't make any since. I know its been very hard for most to get anything but standard awards to HNL (higher mileage premium awards). Have you seen the current fares to HNL? I just did a search for a trip in July and the minimum fare I found from CHI to HNL is $843USD. Sounds like enough margins to me.

OK, UnitedTristar, after that response we are tied. Yes, margins might be high but the fact that you can't get standard mileage tickets to HNL pretty much shows that saver (that's what their called, right?) tickets are all used up. Or at least that's how I see it, but, mind you, my vision isn't so great.
All in all, while UA might make a profit on HNL routes, US Airways wouldn't be smart, IMO, to start HNL service. United's job is to focus on the West and US Airways job is to focus on the East. US Airways wouldn't start HNL service for the same reason United wouldn't start Oil City/Franklin service.

UA's new CEO was in Hawai'i a few months ago and told our governor that the Hawai'i routes had become some of the most profitable in the UA system, hence the reintroduction of ORD-HNL and more NRT service. Try finding cheap fares to Hawai'i, its been very hard since 9/11 as more people want to stay in the US.

There are 2 theories on the potential of US opening a route to Honolulu:
1. They are not going to do it, Honolulu bound passengers can fly with code-share partner UA to the Hawaiian Islands. The ro risk approach.
2. US, at some point, will start a flight to Hawaii, likely PHL-HNL, operating 2 or 3 times per week with 762s. The main reason that US will do this is to make their frequent flyer program more attractive. In recent years, US opened many once or twice a week services from its hubs to lots of destinations in the caribbean area - part of the logic behind this expansion to beach destinations was the ability of US to offer more choice to frequent flyers when they redeem their miles, US determined that it had a better chance of keeping its high-fare premium business pax happy and flying with US if it could offer them reward travel to destinations more exotic than Orlando and Las Vegas. Hawaii could be the next glamour destination.....Hawaii is one of the leading destinations for reward travel and reward seats can be difficult to find.
US is again the in the process of reviewing its route system, so anything could happen.

Dutchjet - With USAirways and United codesharing...and now being fellow members of the Star Alliance, USAirways mileage plus members (sorry, don't know the name of their program) can use their miles for travel on United. I think that the two can be used on a one-for-one basis, although I realize that some carriers require more of their partners miles. The Carribean flights were not to difficult for USAirways because most operate on weekends when spare aircraft were available and the Carribean is close to where the bulk of USAirways operations are (I mean the east coast and southeast in comparison to the west). It will be much easier and cheaper for US to just codeshare with UA on routes to Hawaii...just like it is probably cheaper for UA to codeshare on many of the US routes in the Carribean.
