Different MD-80 Tails

Usually I know the answer to these kind of questions, but I need help on this one. Why do some MD-80s have "wedge" tails, and others have "cone" tails? Last time I was walking around DFW I saw both on AA's MD-80s.

This could be just a slight difference or design change over the years to the same model aircraft. I think the newer ones are the 'wedge' tails to reduce drag.

There was just a thread on this within the last week. Do a search for "screwdriver" tail and you'll find it and the many others on the subject.
