Two Irish airlines cease operations in a month, three so far in 2004. Only four scheduled operators left (EI, FR, RE, WX)...

"Skynet, which operates a daily service from Shannon to Amsterdam and Moscow, has suspended its flights at Shannon because of its failure to solve a financial problem with a leasing company."

"Plans to charter another plane to solve the crisis never materialised."

I guess EI and FR have a pretty strong grip on the market.

Airliner World reported a few months back that Skynet was planning to lease a B763ER to start long-haul flights to Newark in May.

Bestwestern, do you know why the ceased operations? I remember reading that they were achieving load factors of 70%

A 70% load factor with such a small fleet will never pay for the corporate (central) costs of running an airline. Every airline still needs its CEO, COO, and Chief Pilot. I understand that the optimal figure for a small airline is 13 aircraft.

Shannon to Amsterdam and Moscow though, how much traffic could there have really been? Were they really expecting to last?

Keep on truckin'...

There is a good market between Ireland and The Netherlands as anyone who has flown between DUB or ORK and AMS/RTM will tell you. Skynet's marketing was abysmal however. They had a rep for high fares (even though they were quite reasonable) so many still flew with FR to Charleroi to get to Holland from Shannon! ridiculous! No-one in Holland knew of them, not even the large Irish expat community many of who were from the Shannon area.

On any flight I was on to Amsterdam with them (and that was at least 20 since they started), loads were more like 15-30%. AMS-SVO did well because it was an SU codeshare, sold chiefly by SU.

Skynet's crew were great though, and I am sorry to see another fine bunch of people let down by poor managment and decisions.
