Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Air Europa a code-share partner with CO too?

Does this mean that Air Europa is on its way to join skyteam?

The code share will start with AM selling tickets on UX's flight MAD-CUN-MAD:

Air Europa
UX0063 MAD-CUN 14:30 17:55 763 1--4-6-
UX0064 CUN-MAD 20:10 13:00 763 1--4-6-

AeroMexico
AM9563 MAD-CUN 14:30 17:55 763 1--4-6-
AM9564 CUN-MAD 20:20 13:00 763 1--4-6-

Air Europa has code share agreements with Continental Airlines, Alitalia, Southern Winds, Tunisair and Malev where UX places its code on some flights of these airlines. Additionally, Air France places its code on many Air Europa flights. KL is about to sign a code share with UX also.

CO and NW are not fully-righted SkyTeam members... yet. However, they codeshare with DL, and you get to accrue/redeem Medallion Qualifier Miles (MQM's) on them, just as if it was AM, AF, KL or any other SkyTeam member... This could signal their closeness to becoming members at some point...

Yes.....

UX close to Skyteam....

They have code share with CO for MAD/EWR.

Good airline and lots of cnx in Mad.

Hope will open BCN/MEX soon.

I think this is very good news for AM. Nevertheless, I hope that the scope of the codeshare will be expanded so as to allow AM to place its code on several domestic and European flights of UX, and to allow UX to place its code on AM's MEX-MAD flights. We have to remember that MAD is not just an O&D destination from MEX, but also a major gateway to Europe for Mexican travelers, so a broader codeshare will help AM offer its Mexican and European customers the possibility to fly between the European destinations served by UX and MEX, CUN and other destinations in Mexico with one single ticket and with smooth connections.

And the big question....... when will be the time we see a Mexican airline launching flights from CUN to Europe? When!? Good for UX. They are doing pretty well their job... but AM?

Ricardo... I believe this code-share effort is indeed a probe to check how the CUN>Europe market goes... If new widebodies are ordered (and it looks like they might be), and the code-share business goes well (provided AM does a good marketing campaign), an AM-operated CUN>MAD>CUN flight may be very feasible... I say, a year from now, for the next Summer high season.

What do you guys think?

I DOUBT AM will be interested to fly from CUN to Europe. Just like you said in another post. It's pretty sad to see a mexican carrier leaving EWR and all the market to CO....

I also have stats for CUN of summer 2003. I haven't made a graphic in Excel but I'll see if I can do it tomorrow... for now this were the routes and aircraft used from Europe to CUN.

Ghost, I have a question (all, please forgive my ignorance). How come there is a MIA-CUN flight with IB if, theoretically, the Mexican government had cancelled IB's 5th freedom rights on that route? I would have thought that the only carriers with 5th freedom rights were JL MEX-YVR and UA MEX-SJO. What gives?

On another subject, what is this rumor that JK is starting a MAD-GDL flight? I was very surprised to read this information at http://www.invertia.com.mx/inter.asp?tipo=N&n=200405311858_INF_27680061 I would say this is a charter operation. Anybody?

Eddidude,

I also have stats for CUN of summer 2003.

Back to 2003 till summer IB had rights to fly the MIA-CUN route! Once IB increased frequencies to MEx 5 freedom rights to CUN were over!

About the MAD-GDL I think those flights will be schedule!

And I read somewhere else that before year ends someone will start BCN-MEx or MTY or GDL service.

I see, I failed to re-read your previous post. Thanks for the clarification.

I can't believe JK will start regularly scheduled MAD-GDL flights. I bet AM and IB are very mad about it. Who would have thought... the most unlikely carrier of the three is the one who was bold enough to start the route. I honestly wish them a lot of success (and it would be nice to fly with them one day). Star Alliance lovers must be ecstatic that there will be a non-stop link between Spain and Mexico. May this serve as a wake up call and force AM to seriously consider liking MTY and MAD non-stop on a regularly scheduled basis.

I don't think it's JK. Most likely will be Air Plus Comet (part of Grupo Marsans, which owns 5% of Spanair) and would be using their charter planes.

JK doesn't have widebodies. Their largest plane is the 321, and their focus is on domestic and european flights.

As far as I know, LH, JK & SK have said they would like to establish a Latam hub from MAD, although nothing has happened.

Air Plus in the past has stated to make charter flights to PVR. The new one is GDL which I'm not aware, but I'll try to find out.

Wow, absolutely true! I though JK still had their B767-300s but browsing the pictures in DB they don't!

Then I bet Air Plus will be the one launching flights to GDL.

Actually I think its Air Pullmantur. They are already scheduled to land once a week in Puerto Vallarta, but they were also thinking of having the flight stop in GDL (I don't know if they in fact confirmed GDL as a stop). Ghost77, I guess you're going to have to make a trip to Jalisco to take some pics of their 743s landing in tapatio soil.

I did not know JK did not have widebodies, so all your comments make a lot of sense. I find it strange, though, that a website that is always very serious, professional and trustworthy would publish such information (and it being the website of a subsidiary of Telefónica one would think that the info on Spanish companies is pretty accurate). In any case, look forward to the initial flights to GDL and PVR. Will they be regularly scheduled flights or charter flights? It would be truly awesome to see a 743 in GDL!!!
