A week ago my wife and I traveled back to Michigan on a NW bereavement fare. I can't say enough about the Northwest employees. From initial reservations, check-in agents, and flight crews. All were EXCELLENT. As for the WorldGateway in Detroit what can you say but AWESOME! Well done Detroit & Northwest.  Big thumbs up

Now that I'll be using NW as my exclusive carrier I have some questions concerning the airline as well as it's hubs.

1. At one time didn't NW use B744s on the DTW-AMS route? It appears that this will be exclusive A333 territory. Will the 744s be starting new routes or adding additional capacity? Are the 744s being phased out?

2. When is NW joining Skyteam?

3. Do all B744/A333/DC-10 arrivals use 4L-22R?

4. I saw some signs for Air China. Do they fly to DTW?

5. Can one get a visitors pass to check out a WorldClub before joining?

The next questions are about NW and what if any assets would they like of US Airways & CLT:

1. Would NW want US's Caribbean Routes?

2. Are NW A319/320/330 & 752s the same as US?

3. Could anyone see NW leaving MEM for CLT?

Great job once again NW employees. For those NW enthusiasts a subject not realted to the DC-9 retirement.  Wink/being sarcastic

1.1) The 333 is an increase in capacity over the DC-10, so with 3 and sometimes 4 333s a day its still about the same capacity as several D10s and a 744. The 744s are going elsewhere.
1.2) No set date.
1.3) No idea.
1.4) Codeshare partner.
1.5) Hmm. This is a good question. Many airlines do allow it.

2.1) Perhaps... but if NW wanted to fly those routes they could do it now.
2.2) The 320 series yes and no. They are CFMs, but US' use the much more modern -5B vs. NW's all -5As. The 752s are dissimilar.
2.3) Its certainly possible, but that would be awfully expensive.

Glad you enjoyed NW and DTW.....

1. At one time didn't NW use B744s on the DTW-AMS route? It appears that this will be exclusive A333 territory. Will the 744s be starting new routes or adding additional capacity? Are the 744s being phased out?

Yes, up through some time in 2002, a 744 was used on the DTW-AMS route on one of the frequencies. This was used more or less to fly onward to BOM from AMS. Since that flight didn't need the extra capacity it was downgraded to a DC-10 and for simplication of operations in AMS, and to use the 744's solely Trans-Pac, they were pulled from the Atlantic. The 744's will be used exclusively Trans-Pac, LAX-NRT used to be 742 has been upgraded to a 744 for the most part, plus placed on different routes in the Pacific. No the 744's are not being phased out, NW was the 744 launch customer, and took delivery of 2 new 744's in 2002. Once World Business Class upgrades and repaints are complete by the end of the year, the 744 utilization will be pretty much max-ed out.

2. When is NW joining Skyteam?

No hard-set date yet, rumors are saying year-end, but I have no idea.

3. Do all B744/A333/DC-10 arrivals use 4L-22R?
Generally, yes. the 4/22's on the West side of the terminals handle inbound and outbound flights from the West and North. The 3/21's generally handle flights to from the East. Aircraft arriving from both the Atlantic and Pacific arrive from the North and land to the south on 22R about 70% of the time, the other 29% they land on 4L, and the remaining 1% the crosswind runways are used, only in extreme wind conditions. Occasionally they will land on other runways but that depends on traffic and conditions.

4. I saw some signs for Air China. Do they fly to DTW?

No, they are a codeshare partner. (Personally I think its dumb they are listed on the roadway signs, no one else's codeshares are listed)

5. Can one get a visitors pass to check out a WorldClub before joining?

Can't answer for sure.

1The next questions are about NW and what if any assets would they like of US Airways & CLT:

1. Would NW want US's Caribbean Routes?

I have no idea, and generally don't like predicting such hearsay.....

2. Are NW A319/320/330 & 752s the same as US?
A319's I believe are almost similar
A320's, no as NW has many older ones from the late 80's early 90's
752's no, NW uses PW engines, US are mostly ex-Eastern worn out a/c with RR engines. Not to mention all the differences in terms of aviaonics, cabin layouts, interiors, galleys, even exit configuration.

3. Could anyone see NW leaving MEM for CLT?

I don't think that it would be worth the expense for NW to leave MEM for CLT, even if they pick up some of US' assets. Like PIT and CLE, MEM has some trouble because it isn't a huge O&D market or connecting hub. NW could simply move Carribean capacity to MEM and would have no need to move to CLT except for the significantly nicer facilities at CLT.
