Just heard about a plane crash in the Southwest suburbs of Chicago. They say that the Cessna plane took off from MDW and later on called the tower about engine problems.

I'm afraid that I don't see the logic there. If an aircraft has engine problems on (or or shortly after) takeoff, what airport he took off from is really immaterial. He could have just as easily had engine problems after taking off from Meigs....

His Honor the Mayor attacked the airport in an overnight raid back in 2003...or was it 2002?

OPNLguy,

What do you mean a "raid".

Meigs wouldn't of helped, guys this plane crashed Southwest of Midway in Homer township, near lockport, KLOT. Meigs is Northeast of Midway, opposite directions.

In an illegal move, Mayor Daly and City of Chicago roadway personnel took heavy equipment and destroyed the runway at Meigs in the dead of night, stranding millions of dollars worth of aircraft and endangering the lives of people that may have attempted to approach the airport unaware.

Hence, raid.

Guys, what I meant was no one on the ground would have been affected by a Cessna going down if he had taken off from Meigs. SW Chicago is so densely populated. In other words, by closing Meigs, Daley pushes more traffic to Midway, which is tight as it is. See my logic?

OPNLguy has started correctly it was a 'RAID'..!! The mayors wrecking crews showed up at midnight, unannounced and without prior warning or notification to the FAA and destroyed the runway.

BOT- The plane was some sort of small Cessna- I've heard both four and six seats; the information is still preliminary. WBBM is reporting 2 fatalities. It looks like a detached garage at a home in 139th street got destroyed, but no one is reporting any ground casualties. If I find a link that you guys can access, I'll post it. If a pilot with engine trouble was aiming for Meigs, the potential for casualties on the ground when he didn't make it would have been much higher. I completely disagree with 757/767- Meigs was not the airport to shoot for when you were unsure whether you would make it (and as already noted, this accident was in Will County anyway).

He did what?! What's he doing now- he should be locked up, or prosecuted. Has he already? What was the motive or need for this raid?

Rather than re-hash all the details and get this particular thread any more off-topic than it already is, try a search for "meigs" and I'm sure you'll find the whole ugly story...

He did it because he "believed" that Meigs posed a threat to nearby downtown Chicago.

I'd think that the 744s, MD-11s, and 777s frequenting ORD would be more of a threat than someone's GIV.

Scottish Laddie,

Mayor Daly is still the Mayor of Chicago...amazing as that sounds...The planes that were stuck there were allowed to take off on the taxiways to get out of the airport...Think I heard some 42 or so light planes were stranded initially.

This sounds pretty amazing... And I feel close to it, both because I fly a Cessna 182RG, and because I remember how much I loved landing (a very difficult landing) in Meigs Field, and the awesome views of downtown Chicago at dawn, when taking off the next morning.

But I do remember (in that difficult landing) how glad was I that there were no houses under me, but just water.

Even if the Mayor thought it was a "threat" that is not right to go in there and just use a wrecking ball without any notice. And how the hell is he still mayor?

Actually he's not pushing the GA to MDW. Most of them now go to PWK which is far but not that far from D'town Chicago... PWK is the busiest (or 2nd busiest) GA Airport in Illinois? i think
