Just made a reservation on Virgin Atlantic for LHR-LAX VS23 in August and was quite surprised to hear that the aircraft was going to be an A340-600.

When I said "600!?!?!?!? not 300?" He said yes this aircraft is going to be an Airbus A340-600.

Just checked on v-flyer.com and it looks like only A343s have operated this route in recent history.

Does anyone know if VS is going to sending some 346s to LAX instead of the 343s?

Edit: By the way, I didn't realize it until now but I've passed the 1000 mark!

I've flown that route on A340-300. Maybe it's time to make another trip  Smile

This could be VS changing types so that the new upper class suites are offered on both of LAX flights.

Currently, the A343 is not scheduled to be re-fitted with the Suites, whereas the 744's and A346's are being re-done now.

From 1st July the A343 will not be serving JFK for the same reason.

It's interesting they are rotating out 343s for 346s because of new seats. Can this imply that the 343s are on there way out?

Good question Cloud4000,

VS are going to be ordering new planes soon - rumored to be either more A346's or 777's - up to 30 orders are expected.

The story with the A343 fleet is less clear, they have sold one of them, and another two were going to leave the fleet, but were kept to cope with VS's expansion plans.

It seems that the A343's will stay for a little while longer (and seemingly not get re-fitted with the Suites). More should be clear when the much anticipated order is announced.........

If VS to order T7´s they have to remove their slogan "4 engines 4 longhoul"
that would be a shame, so I go for 346.........

Can they fit an A346 on stand 27?

My guess is that VS will likely be phasing out their A340-300 fleet in favor of the A340-600 and A340-600HGW down the road. My guess is that VS will place an order for the A346HGW at the upcoming Farnborough Air Show--somewhere between 15 to 25 planes.

Hi,

If you give me the exact date I will check aircraft details for you.

As far as I know there are no plans to operate A346 to LAX.

CREWREST- I think you are right. I don't believe any of the T2 stands at LAX are able to accomodate an A346.

Regards,

SevenHeavy

So long 701, it was nice knowing you.

Not so guys, the A340-600 prototype (with VS interior- I went aboard it) was docked at gate 23 or 24 on the eastern face of T2 on two different dates when it came thru in 2002. It does make one of the adjacent gates unusable when it did so. It was parked here to prove to VS that could indeed use T2.

600

SevenHeavy was asking what date you plan to travel. I also work for VS so will check at work tomorrow as I hadn't seen anything either about 346s doing the VS23/24.

I was on the A340-600 round-the-world flight that went via LAX and we did indeed park on T2, although it was pretty tight and we had to be towed onto stand. Btw I thought I read somewhere that VS was having to move to T4??

Cheers

Airchabum and sevenheavy,

sorry, i'm an idiot. i got so involved in putting the h1, bold, italic and underline tags for the "600" that I forgot to include the date.

the date of travel is August 10th, 2004.

Thanks in advance. This is my first time on virgin. I've been flying BA on this route between 2 and 3 times a year since 1991 and now I've had enough of them!

Ray...
We're hoping here (in the States) that the order will be for the -300ER and 50 nice little 73G's to run up and down the coast.....

Of course it could go the other way too....

Just checked and VS23 LHR-LAX 10Aug is still showing as a 343. There are no current plans for 346s to LAX I'm afraid  Sad

If my memory serves me right, the two A340-600 demo visits at LAX parked at gates 21 and 23 at Terminal-2. Having said this then gate 22 and 24 on the opposite side of the terminal being identical should also have the ability to dock the A346. I'm not 100% sure of the end gates like 27 and 28 as they are directly adjacent to the active taxiway.

I have checked with a couple of sources and they both show that the 2 VS flights to LAX on the 10th August 2004 will be on 1 744-VS007 and on 1 A343-VS023. The rtn flights 008 and 024 will be on the 744 and 343!

Sorry mate!!!

I am also eagerly awaiting to try VS346's and their suites!!!

I flew VS007 to LAX 2months ago on the 744 and it was excellent! The rtn flight on the 343 while not as good was still enjoyable!!! I hope you have fun!!!

Chris
