On a recent trip to Colombia a customer of mine said that possibly Continental/COPA or a Brazilian company would take over Avianca. Can anyone shed some light on this - and perhaps when this will take place?

Your guess is as good as mine, but are you sure they are up for sale or codeshare?

Airplanes are only as good as the people who fly&fix them.

A small new Brazilian company called OceanAir bought major stakes in AV and will manage them.

Dude, trying to do some research sometimes does not hurt anybody.
Still under analysis, not sure wich one will take, more probably COPA, probably until the midle of the year.

Hopefully this company will bring back the glorious days of the ol' red & white! Come back to us Avianca! Ditch the ugly gray scheme!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The issue of whether a Brazilian group or Copa Airlines (with assistance from Continental) will buy Avianca out of bankruptcy is still in the US Bankruptcy Court. At the request of Avianca, the decision has again been postponed until June 11th.

For your information JJMNGR, Oceanair Aerotaxti Ltda and Oceanair Linhas Aereas Ltda, is owned and operated by Grupo Maritima which is owned by German Efromovich. He is also the owner of Sinergy Group who is bidding for AV. So far the decision between the creditors committee, Avianca and the court session for chapter 11 proceedings was postponed until June 11 to ultimate the restructuring plan and project for the airline, and no decision has been made as to whether Avianca has been sold off to CM/CO or Sinergy.

The impression I get is that whomever is deciding this, is not in favour of letting Continental and Copa own Avianca. That partnership far outbid the other bids, and really is probably best suited to make a go of it, yet the judge keeps delaying and welcoming more bidders.

AV757: I could do the research on google or whatever, but just for the sake of clarity within this thread: "German Efromovich" is a person whose name is "Germán" and Last name "Efromochich", or a company nmed like a person (like "Thomas Cook"), or a German company named "Efromovich"??

Please do clarify. Also, a Mexican newspaper reported some eight weeks ago that 75% of Avianca was being purchased by "Brazilian investors", while the remaining 25% would remain in control of Colombian coffee growers. Is the foregoing true?

The name of the owner of the Sinergy Group of Brazil is Germán Efromovich.

The Sinergy Group offer is for 75% ownership of Avianca and the other 25% will be retained by the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation, the Santodomingo Group owner of 50% of Avianca at the moment wants to sell all of their assets and participation in Avianca.

The Copa/Continental offer is for 100% of Avianca.

Whoever ends up with this company, I hope they leave it intact and restore it to its former self. It's still too early to see how much damage AF will inflict on KLM. I can only hope that Avianca will be spared a similar fate. I'd hate to see another carrier with so much history disappear:

CM is "servicing" CO interests in a possible deal about AV.

Some shares in the hands of Colombians, according with the best of my knowledge, is the best for AV. Will keep AV as a Colombian carrier.

100% in the hands of CO through CM????????? Will be the same situation of KL, as Planeguy stated...

Letting CO acquire the total amount of AV's shares, will get it to an end.

May I have your opinion AV757 (Captain)?

I would love to link Colombian and Chilean aviation with LAN managing Avianca, but whatever.
I think the best for AV is ti be a part of CM/CO, besides, wasn't Panama a part of Colombia? AV would remain "in the family" Smile

No, in fact it's a great idea but not exactly in that way. I would prefer that Avianca stayed as it is (or maybe under CO), and that LAN started its own branch up here in Colombia. I would be nice to see the actual carriers plus another foreign body competing againts each other. Healthy competition rules !

Don't about LAN, but knowing how overprotective our local aviation authorities are, you're absolutely right. It would be a nice panorama nevertheless.

And about the movie, haven't seen it, but heard something related to that. Maybe next weekend I'll go.

OMG this subject has SOOO many threads... could anyone just take the time to search for them? AV just got their 6th extension on their CH11 decision. Anyway, I'm a little buzzed and tired to search for the threads, but they're there with some good information on the subject matter.

RE: The day after tomorrow

I find it morbid in my opinion to include that accident in the movie as part of the plot, seriously. It happened many years ago, yet I find it disturbing that thet made it part of the movie.

It's related to another topic, but here I go: One of the big complaints about Independence Day is that Latin America wasn't even mentioned: The aliens where interested even in the tribes in Africa, but none on Brazil, Chile or Argentina. I think Emmerich paid us back, there are some things that remind us: Peru, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia

I disagree. Definitely before they belong to U.S.A. (not Panama) I prefer the Colombian Coffee growers as part of the shareholders. Remember that in an eventual acquisition of AV by CO/CM, CO not CM will pay the feast.

If Avianca is to survive there have to be radical changes in who owms and administrates the company, with participation of the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation we see too many conflicts of interests created and they already showed us that under their creation and administration of Alianza Summa which they want to keep intact; the disappearance of Aces, and Sam with an uncertain future as is. That is why we consider is the the most important change that must occur to restructure the company has got to be management.

We consider that a whole new administration and operational plan is mandatory to save the airline, and that CM/CO have very good knowledge of Latin American infrastructure and the expertise to really manage this company.

Somebody mentioned LAN, they were the first that wanted to finsh off the airline and rebuild the whole thing as LAN-Colombia, without keeping anything of the Colombian aviation as they have done in the rest of Latin America.
