I see that AirTran has a hideous new color scheme on its 737s ( http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/1595250/) but what are the plans for the 717s? Will they be repainted as well or remain in original colors?

It looks like someone put the contrast up too high in Photoshop. Ugh.

Oooh... I'm not sure I like that either. I really like the current color scheme on the 717's. It looks good on the Airbuses, too. Oh, well...

Hmmm....not sure yet if I like it. But one thing clearly should be changed: the "AirTran" title on the fuselage should be much larger. The titles are too small on the 717, and on this plane as well.

In the late '80s, both Continental and United enlarged the titles on their paint schemes of the time, and in both cases it was a big improvement. I'd say the titles should be about that size.

Memo to JetBlue: your titles are too small as well.

Oh geez....from plain....to plain ugly.
I would have stuck with the original.
The blue looks out of place.

I cannot believe it: I whole-heartedly agree with Greg: it's plain ugly. As if the AirTran Execs were colour-blind: The blue on the engines clashes hideously with the other colours.

I loved the old colors, but these ones are just cut rate. They violate so many "colorscheme guidlines." I mean, what the hell is with the cheatline starting in the middle of the tail? And who puts completely mismatched engines on like that? If the cheatline started a the APU below the tail and merely swept under (rather than curling back up) then the livery would be decent, but it really looks like some second rate travel agency's leased junker rather than a new 737 for a major airline.

I really like it. I think it is a maturing of the old livery. The 717s should stay as is, and then they can really do something hot 10 years down the line  Smile.

I have to agree. The cheatline sweep is completely off. Overall the change is good because it moves away from the adapted ValuJet scheme. Perhaps a little more "Back to the Future"...

At least United has colors that match and go with eachother. Blue blue and blue. Come on AirTran, light teal tail, dark teal belly, red stripe out of nowhere, darker bright blue above the red stripe out of nowhere, bright blue engines that match nothing even more than everything else doesn't match anything, and to top it off, black on the nose. Sheeesh.

I'm a bit queasy about these colors myself. I can only hope that, as someone stated in a different thread, the look is better in person. Maybe that would help with the perceived color variations between engines and stripe, tail and belly, etc. I really don't think they used seperate colors for those areas.

Please, please let it look better in person.

Please.

On closer inspection, the blue of the stripe and on the engines actually match. The apparent color diference is a bleed-effect optical illusion.

Engines: (top)
Red: 41
Green: 121
Blue: 228

Engines: (side, no shadow)
Red: 27
Green: 94
Blue: 183

Stripe: (over wing)
Red: 58
Green: 134
Blue: 222

Stripe: (Behind trailing edge, directly over "B" in BOEING 737-700)
Red: 21
Green: 81
Blue: 169

Still, you guys know I like FL, and it's UGLY! That blue only belongs if they use it to replace the teal!

If they wanted to make a change, here's what they should have done:

1. Keep the tail and engines teal, make a portion of the belly teal, make the rest of the fuselage tan, put the red and blue stripe as a separation between the tan and teal, and either keep the blue titles or maybe go with a teal lettering.
(I'm working on a version of this one, hopefully I'll have it done tomorrow evening after I get home from work)

2. Make the entire fuselage tan, and keep the tail and nacelles teal.
(If I have a chance this weekend, I'll attempt this one as well.)

As for the website address, if they would have used a different font, it might look less out of place.

I like the cheatline sweep, but the off-white is too bright, it needs to be quite a bit darker more like the 717's.  Big thumbs up

Your ideas sound good, SRBmod. OUBoy's idea of "Back to the Future" is good too, I would just suggest keeping the A on the tail instead of the sun-logo. With a blue belly, then the blue engines would work.

Another possiblity...have the teal sweep down the fuselage in line with the front upper tail line, with the blue and red cheatline starting there, rounding off to parallel about three feet below the windows, and going to the nose. Then change the engines to teal to match the teal belly.

I think its better than the A320s painted in AirTran colors. Reduces the amount of tan on the aircraft, especially up front. Compare these two:

The Official AirTran Response for the New Livery

......The design for the new livery was chosen to create a more contemporary look for the airline while not getting away from our roots and corporate colors. You’ll notice the tan has been changed to white to freshen the design, while the tail design has the consistency of the teal with the AirTran Airways “a” incorporated, and the red and blue stripes now appear along the side of the aircraft. All of the 737s will roll out with the new livery, and the 717 will be changed as they are going through their normal c-checks.
