If I'm reading that application right (however small the possibility may be), they are looking to serve those countries from airports other than CLT or PHL (or at least have the possibility of other service). I don't think Central America is withing the perimiter of either LGA or DCA, so where in the world are they looking? BOS?? MCO?? ORD or IAD with UA?? It is really weird.

Where does it say that?

TGU or SAP, PTY, and MGA would most likely be served from CLT, where the feed is.

That makes it sound like they already have authority for PHL and CLT (those would be the select gateways) and would like more.

It isn't any secret, or shouldn't be, that US Airways is going to go forward very strong into Latin America, South America, and the Carribean once more mainline planes are freed up. This will include flights leaving from cities like MCO, FLL, BOS, IAD, etc. One would only need to look at their currently route map internationally to see they intend to exploit these niche markets and also the loop holes (if you want to call them that) in the DCA and LGA slot restrictions.

US Airways has certificate authority for ATL/BWI/DFW/MIA/EWR/MSY/NYC/TPA/WAS-Honduras/Nicaragua/Panama services. I would imagine this derives from the text of the previous bilaterals, and not from the likelihood of US using any of those gateways. Now that these countries are Open Skies, it's common for US (or any airline, for that matter) to apply for broad all-points authority.



I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

Don't be surprised to find out that the gateway city would be Ft. Lauderdale. Markets like SAP, MGA, and TGU need a decent amount of O&D to remain profitable, especially with thier tendency to be big VFR markets. FLL provides this, and it stays in line with the rumours that US Airways wants to become a bigger player at FLL. They could also get a foot in the very profitable Miami-Central America market, which has been dominated by TACA and American Airlines (with some other minor players) and is extremely profitable, because you have people paying fares averageing $450-$550 for short 2 hour flights.

Also, the new service is not going to be from DCA or LGA. That has nothing to do with the perimeter rule, it has to do with the fact that DCA and LGA cannot recieve international flights from countries that do not pre-clear customs. Those countries are Aruba, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and Canada.

- USAirways used to be the #2 carrier at FLL, now they're like #8.

- USAirways just entered into a partnership with Florida Coastal Airlines, whose hub is in Ft. Lauderdale, with service to Key West, Marathon, Treasure Cay, & Marsh Harbour. FCA is adding 2 more domestic florida cities to its network in 2004 and up to 5 new Bahamian cities in 2005, along with possibly Naples & Ft. Myers - Ft. Lauderdale service by winter

- USAirways has held on to all their FLL gate space, counter space, & offices after the Metrojet pull out.

- American is adding FLL flights to the caribbean / Central / South America & so is Spirit

- FLL is much cheaper to operate in & out of than MIA

You're right they still have a huge ticket counter area as well as Gates: E1,E3,E5,E7,E9,E10. Quite a lot of gates for what something like 6 flights to CLT, 7 flights to PHL, 3 flights to PIT, 3 flights to D.C. and the saturday flights to CUN and BDA....Usairways used to be huge at fll, hopefully the near future holds something good!

Yeah, it is something else about FLL and they remember with those days of Metrojet is pulling out back of after 9/11. It get rid of them with B737-200. I did not like them with metrojet for me either.

As for ticket counter and will be find with them near of these x-ray machines. I am stll remember with metrojet was there in 2001. It is very huge some of those new service to CUN with Saturday only. Now, will make get more expansion out of FLL.

Also, they will began new service from FLL-PVD for Saturday only service, too.
