Tehran-Birmingham on an A300 or A310?
Is Irans second carrier Mahan Air still coming to Birmingham this summer?
If so when is the first flight due ?
Doe any one know what booking are like and if the service is another Central Asia flight looking for onward travel to the sub continent due to the lack of regional UK -India direct services.

I heard that rumour quite a while ago, but have no further details.

By the way, what happened to Air Slovakia at BHX? Its operation there seems to have ended quite quickly.

Mahan air also was scheduled to operate a THR-AMS flight, however there were many operational problems. I know Mahan air also flies to Asia.

Just noticed that their official name is "Mahan Airlines", and the service is confirmed on their website to commence from July 2 twice a week nonstop with an A310-300:

W5 5019 Dep BHX 1800 Arr THR 0320 plus 1
W5 5019 Dep BHX 2000 Arr THR 0520 plus 1

Ams their route network is very inconsistent, you cant be sure which city is still part of it, for Asia I think they are only in Delhi and Bangkok, previously they also served Kabul, Colombo and Maldives (seasonal), map still shows them but schedules dont, they also seem to be lining up Manila for the future.

Andie007 yes seen at Dusseldorf myself.
The reason for the initial post was that they were supposed to start flights to MANCHESTER last year (slots were allocated i believe!)but never did and yet they actually press released the Birmingham service but have yet to make an appearance.
Whilst there are Iranians in the UK i just wonder if there is real demand for Tehran from a regional airport.
Iran is NOT the worst place in the Middle East (US propagada aside) and there aren't to many asylum refugees from there so who is going to be flying with them unless they are going onto the Sub Continent !
I also expect they are a DRY airline so won't suit non muslims on such along flight will they.
(Referring to backpacker types looking for the Indian experience if there still are Hippie types or as they say these days doing the world in your GAP year!)

Airmale yes I suspect that's true and thanks for the scheduled .
Just hope it lasts.
Birmingham seems to be more successful (cheaper ?) for these central Asian operators than even Manchester.
Both Turkmenstan and Uzbekistan having terminated the Manchester flights some time ago.
Really makes no sense that Air India terminated regional services from the UK does it.
Demand is certainly there and with growing Asian Middle Classes and new business opportunities the Mid Cabin high yield seats could also be sold successfully.
Instead Air India were made to go for the Middle Eastern low cost worker routes with there A310s.
Sooner the Indian politicos stop interfering in businesses and the market place the better.

I flew W5 on the THR-KER-THR route during the Bam earthquake crisis. The plane was a Tu154. The service was good. Mahan, as with all Iranian airlines, has an unclear route network. The main problem is, naturally, the illogical and imperialist US embargo against aircraft sales. Also, the other major problem is that third country leaders cater mostly to American interests. For example, Iran Air has been planning to fly to Canada to serve the rather large expatriate Iranian community in North America. The Canadians have thus far refused. I do hope that W5 service to BHX (or MAN) prove successful. Does anyone know what happened to the other 5 A310-304s that W5 had bought from TK? Of the original 7 only two have been delivered. The others are still in TK fleet.

On the Gulf routes, AI does quite well, although 'low cost worker' are the main pax

Maybe this practice will end once the LCC of AI (738) with routes to the ME is launched, and some of the 310 are 'free' again. But since this is all in the future and subject to speculation (and not yet cleared), it does not make sense now to talk elaborately on that
