I just find out that CX will not use its 744 even on the 1 Stop service (via YVR) to JFK!!!! It has being replaced by the 34C

only the CX838 to YVR uses the 744.

She has a new ad that start the non-stop flight to JFK using the A340-600 from 01 July. Besides CO, she is the second airline has non-stop flight from HKG to JFK.

Yup...A343 doing the stop, and A346 doing the non-stop. I can't wait to get
on my brand new A346 to HKG. No more triple tranfers for me to Indochina.  Smile

CO does not offer HKG-JFK. They fly into/out of EWR.

United did serve JFK-HKG nonstop in response to CO's EWR-HKG nonstop, but stopped as a result of 9/11.

UA actually dropped its HKG-JFK non-stop service before 9/11 happened.

CX is offering a great fare from NY to DPS---- $600 R/T have to book by the end of June, already got mine booked!!!..I figured you'd spend the equivalent just non reving out there and also back up tickets in case any of the flights are full......thought it was a great fare.
Now , can anyone tell me what the A340-300's are like that CX has....Entertainment system etc ......and coach seating etc....thanks....the plane from HKG to DPS and back will be a A330.

It certainly wasn't a lack of passengers. It was the necessary weight restriction.

probably both reasons

"as the carrier was operating a 747-400 which it reportedly had hard times filling up."

Indeed it was (along with the restriction).

On one occassion, that flight went out with only 84 pax.

Heard from CX crew that these 346 have many defects in their cabins... many non-functioning PTVs, occasional malfunction of air-conditioning... one cabin crew fewer at Y1 galley than typical team as its has one additional galley but only one additional crew is added...

I wished CX use the 744 on this route (which UA did before)
I personally don't like the 346 (espcially in J and F Class) the 744 feels more spacious and don't have like 60+ J class all in one whole cabin!

It has insufficient range and payload.

How did UA managed to do it then?

I think CX and UA are the only airlines that used the 744 on HKG-JFK before!

Aa777jr, the 34C is simply the A343.

Why does CX call it the 34C? I have no idea...

Firstly i am not a FREAK, I am just referring to what CX call thier plane.
They call it 34C because it is the first A340 plane to have the NEW business class C= C Class = Business.

Yeh, what happened to that HKG-JFK route on UA? They flew it for just about a month before 9/11. It had nothing to do with 9/11. Also, when they started that flight, they dropped the JFK-NRT flight to a 777. And that never went back to a 744! What happened there?

Also, while we are on the topic of JFK and UA--UA was supposed to start JFK-CDG service a month after the HKG service. What ever happened to that? This was all pre 9/11 and pre UA financial problems (chap 11)

Flying on the CX 831 (JFK-HKG non-stop) in First Class on July 23. Can't wait!

For F passengers, the switch to two daily flights is not all bad. There are now 4 more F seats per day on the route (16 -- 8 on each flight vs. 12 on the 744). That said, the F cabin on the 744 is better.

Just wondering why United did not use a 777 to serve JFK-HGK if they were having trouble filling up a 744.

I flew New York-Hong Kong-New York on UA's 821/820 when it was operational. Both flights were lightly booked in Business and Economy (lightly, meaning booked half full). There was an issue about me making the return flight (Hong Kong-New York) -- flying employee standby, because the of weight restrictions, even with only about 130 pax booked in Y. But ended up making it in C. Was a fantastic flight.
