I think the consensus will be for EK, unless you want STAR miles.

EK is only slightly better as their J Class is pretty ordinary (even the new 345)
Good thing about TG is Price and also Star

G'day

I have tried both TG and EK's J class product and would go for EK if you are interested in a better seat and better IFE. TG has better service and Star miles but is as everyone probably know very poor in the IFE and have rather ordinary J class seats.

I just love the new EK business class seat - especially the massage......

If you want to try a bit of a different option, why not go SWISS to Singapore, and then SIA to MEL? This carrier is trying really hard and I think deserves a bit more support. I know the economic arguement is that Zurich doesn't need it's own airline, but then again nor does half of europe... so when a good quality option presents itself, we should give it a go... that is if we want them to actually be around. It would be a rather boring world if we were left with Just BA, Air France and Lufthansa in europe.... and don't laugh.. it could happan yet (for long haul that is)

I would opt for EK as well. The only benefit I see with TG is better service. EK is a bit on the inconsistent side here, otherwise EK wins almost every other category. It basically depends on what your needs are, PTV's or Star Miles?

I flew EK J from SYD-AKL-SYD and would highly recommend Emirates... they are one of the few airlines in the world that have exceptional service!

highly recommend EK over TG. on EK, u can do mel with A345 from DXB direct, or B773 via SIN. not too mention the inflight service of EK, which i recon better even than SQ, airports at transit points for EK in the case would be SIN and DXb are miles better than the aged BKK.
cheers
