I had a friend who recently flew a couple weeks ago and he was telling me how the guy in front of him had his labtop on with a DVD that was an "adult" movie. He told me no one noticed this gentleman has this type on movie on his labtop that was pretty large. Anyway has this happen to anyone else and is it illegal at all?

Interesting. never heard of this topic ever hehe.
I think it is not Iligal unless he show it widely enugh while pasangers are seating near by him. If it was on the laptop and he had the headphones on and im sure he did then that wouldnt be no a problem but if it did disturb the person next to the gentleman watching porn movie on a dvd then this means that the flight attendents could discualifid the laptop or to please switch it off.

I'm more curious about how the hell he could manage to watch an adult movie, with the laptop (supposedly) on the table...without injuring any private parts.

In Japan, on the trains at night, there are businessmen who are reading porno mags, in full view of children, ladies, and other businessmen. Of course, the businessmen all try to get in their looks while the schmuck who got the thing unfolds the centerfold.
There are also kids underage at bookstores here who flip through X-rated cartoons that are worse than the cheeziest pornos out there...
In Japan, I don't partake in it, but doing that stuff in public is normal. Nothing you can do about it.
In America, you'd be on the nightly news if you were on a bus with a porno letting everyone and their grandmothers see.
Personally, though, it doesn't bother me, so long as the person next to me on the plane turns his laptop away from me, and he doesn't start...well...you know...doing anything obscene and nasty that he shouldn't be doing in front of other people...

It's a question of social mores. Generalizing: In the US, nudity and eroticism are highly taboo. In Europe, nudity is no huge deal. In Japan, Cessna172RG describes it above.
Personally, I find people who are shocked and disturbed at topless/nude beaches and nudity in the press (even a nipple) a bit weird. For example, shielding your kids completely from that kind of thing can bite you in the ass later. If you think your kids can't get hold of nude material and/or porn, you have another thing coming. Just my personal opinion, and for sure all cultures are different. But I digress.
On an international flight, I find that one should not flaunt this sort of thing. Even if I personally wouldn't care either way, some people are offended. As I like to say:
- Smile.
- Be overpolite.
- Scoot over.
And I will add:
- Keep a low profile.

I think there was a thread related to this issue several months ago. First of all, from a common sense and USA perspective, any passanger whom would play a XXX or any film or look at a magazine with sex or significant nudity on a commercial aircarft is acting very inconsideratly to his/her fellow passangers. While such progams/movies may not be 'illegal' on many airlines unless invloved child porn, they are most probably illegal if on a airline based in certain countries, such as those in the Islamic world.
If a passanger on any aircraft is offended or fears offence upon minors by the display of such material they should complain to the f/a whom can request firmly that the passanger stop playing/looking at such offensive material. After that, if the person persists, then may be a violation of law depending on the country on the grounds of disobeying an order of a flight attendent.

Do most Americans feel that it is inappropriate to read Playboy on an a/c in the U.S.? I am a 21 year old college student and I not only get playboy for the pictures, I also happen to love many of the articles. I have brought it out during flights, and I feel if it can be sold inside the security checkpoints, then it should be able to be read as well. As long as I am not opening the centerfold or being stupid about how I hold the magazine I feel it is ok in an a/c. I know Playboy is a far cry from DVD porn on a laptop, but where should the line be drawn and who decides that? What is wrong with nudity anyway, and why is the U.S. so against it? Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, in most states in the US that would be illegal. I'm not going to do a search but suffice it to say that obscene and harmful matter, and/or the exhibition of obscene or harmful matter can likely be construed as a misdemeanors in most states (CA for sure). Do a search..find the statutes. There are thousands.
I think most states up the ante if it is exposed to minors.
Porn (or even Playboy) on a plane? Fairly idiotic idea unless you want to test the obscenity laws. Get your rocks off at home...no one is impressed your DVD can play The Experience of Hot Pussy #10.

I'd heard there was one state (I forget which but could be CA) that is proposing the playing of X rated DVD in vehicles be illegal. Have you ever driven behind anyone who has a DVD player going in their car or SUV?? Very distracting, but imagine if it was a porno flick!! I'm surprised there is not a law against viewing porn in public places, I mean most states have laws against strip clubs and their frontage so that you can't see into them (much as I've tried!!).

LOL!!!! Man....he really watched a porno on his laptop????? Wow. Well....one thing's for sure...he's got some gile just to try it! Can't fault him there!
Now that I've stopped laughing, and wiped the tears from my eyes....I do think that it may not be very appropriate to view it...while I don't think it is/should be illegal....The idea that a 7-14 year old kid could be watching it is a bit disturbing. If I were a parent, I wouldn't want my kids to see stuff like that in public...If they want to download that stuff at home behind my back and watch it...how can I really stop it? I do think the airplane isn't an appropriate place to watch such things. If there's a kid seated behind you that gets up to stretch for a moment...he/she's gonna top mom/dad on the shouler and point it out....Let's face it, kids LOVE to break news to EVERYONE. Maybe he should have waited until he got home/to the hotel room

Funny to read that in some US states it is illegal. Well most pornographic materials are produced in the US, so why shouldn't this man be entitled to watch porn. Land of the free, right?
Common sense would be different
Maybe it was
"Fill Jill" or
"Shaving Ryan's Privates" or
"Schindler's Lust"

The funniest part of this for me is when I try to imagine being in his head and feeling so gutsy..."hey! I feel like watchin' a porno!"
LOL, some people are so quirky.
When I was a kid my family flew Western from HNL to SFO. During the night flight, everyone was alseep in the cabin. My dad woke up midway to find the couple across the aisle from us in the act of some heavy sex. A distinguished looking older gent and his boy toy surfer. Was quite a scene as the stewardesses all came running and pandemonium erupted. Very bizarre and in poor taste of course but a funny memory.

Maybe it's his job and was just taking his work onto the plane
It probably wouldn't be strictly illegal in the Netherlands, and many people would probably just laugh and look away, it's definitely not the right thing to do. I think I would be OK with someone just reading Playboy without forcing it upon fellow passengers. AFAIK at least the covers are not too bad. Some (e.g. very religious) people could have big problems with it, though. I'm always very careful not to bug other people on the plane, I don't want to create unconfortable situations in such a confined space

Q: Do most Americans feel that it is inappropriate to read Playboy on an a/c in the U.S.?
A: Porn (or even Playboy) on a plane? Fairly idiotic idea unless you want to test the obscenity laws.
I would certainly agree that video porn has no place on an airplane (or any other public place), but Playboy I'm not so sure about. I haven't seen an actual Playboy magazine in years, but as I recall it just shows some nudity, as opposed to graphic depictions of sex. The photo spreads in Maxim, Stuff, FHM, etc. can be almost as raunchy--just take away the minimal clothing and it's basically the same. In other words, I think Playboy falls just short of "pornography." However, magazines of a more graphic nature (Hustler, for example) are a different story, and are probably best enjoyed in privacy.
Does that mean I encourage people to sit reading Playboy openly on planes? Definitely not. Use your own good taste/judgment. If you're sitting at the window next to an empty seat in the middle of a dark cabin, I don't think reading Playboy will land you in jail. But if you're next to an old lady, or a 10-year old, I'd recommend leaving the Playboy in your bag, along with the Maxim, Stuff, FHM, etc. That's just common courtesy.
More generally speaking, are American attitudes towards nudity overly prudish and puritanical? Perhaps, but I'm not going to get into that here.
BTW, Cessna172RG, that is so true about the Japanese businessmen on trains--I often saw them reading all kinds of nasty manga while I was over there. Are you still in Fukuoka?

Hehe, this is quite a funny topic. I've never experienced a situation like this. I wouldn't have a problem with a fellow passenger watching porn as long as he kept the volume low and wouldn't do what Cessna172RG described in the end of his post.
However, since a passenger airplane is usually a very multi-national/cultural place, with many people with many different beliefs and values, I think it would be smart not to play such movies, so you can't offend anyone.

I was once on this flight between LHR and JFK on a UA flight. There was a Dutch couple sitting next to me with their roughly 10 year old son and another relative sitting behind them. About halfway into the flight, the husband pulls out this porn magazine and reads it. More surprising is that his wife read some of it. Most surprising is that the SON gets up to look at it over his father's shoulder. I have no problem with porno...but there is a time and place!
