I was just wondering if anybody knows what category ILS CWL has?

It's not Cat III or Autoland, or atleast it wasn't a year or 2 ago. My Dad was landing there in fog, and the pilot informed the passengers that the airport wasn't equipped for autoland, if I remember rightly the first attempt resulted in a go-around.

If its only Cat I then thats pretty poor, unless they rarely experience bad conditions.
I know NCL is Cat IIIB on runway 7 and Cat II on runway 25.

Cardiff is only CATI ILS.

Because of it's location, just off the Bristol Channel, Cardiff is often foggy early in the morning between around 0300-0700 - even in the summer. It will clear as the sun burns it off, but the early morning inbound flights will usually have to divert to Bristol due to the weather at Cardiff being below Cat1 minima. Happens fairly regularly, summer and winter.

Strange the airport have not invested in a Cat III ILS given the amound of traffic it now handles, and their poor weather record. There certianly appear to be no technical reasons why CWL couldn't have a Cat III ILS to Rwy 30 at the very last. Finally a photo to illustrate what I mean!

Actually, Cardiff has one of the best weather records in the UK (2nd only to Prestwick, I think) - That's one of the reasons why they only have a CAT1 ILS.

The ILS eqipment at Cardiff is quite new and capabale of CATIII. CAT II/III ops require procedures and equipment (not just ILS) at increased expense - something that isn't really justified.

Funny,
We have more wx diversions from CWL than any other UK airport we fly to, almost always as I described, early morning fog - and many more cases where a diversion has been anticipated but the wx has improved at the last minute.

Similar conditions at other UK airports do not pose a problem, even at BRS as long as RWY27 is available! EXT which is also CATI posed very few problems over the winter.

I give you that the weather over the past 2 weeks at Cardiff has been poor overnight - I've been at Cardiff 8 years and used the had to apply 'Absolute Minima' for the first time ever the other morning!

But in general, Cardiff accepts many more diversions than it loses - because of it's good weather, long runway and engineering facilities (and excellent ATC!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy ).

If the Airport Company decide to install CATIII, I certainly won't object! But I don't think the justification is there.
