I have a question for all you non-revs out there. My wife and I are flying SA - Georgia">ATL-CPT in a couple of weeks on SA. Since it is one incredibly long flight I was wondering if it is totally impossible to be upgraded as an interline non-rev. I figure that it is not likely but is there anyone that has any tips that I might try? Also, what can I expect as far as loads (we will be space available) and service? I've heard good things about SA but any first hand accounts would be great!

Drupy,

Actually I am flying the same flight next week, last time I flew that route SA was using the 744's but a friend of mine who recently flew back home on the new 346's said that it was great. I am actually American and just live over there and I would have to say that SAA is one hell of a good airline, service is excellent and according to my friend the flight last Weeks was only about 65% full which gave them plenty of room. The only drawback now with the 346's is the fuel stop in Isla de sol( Cape verde islands).

have a great time in Cape town

I think it is terrible with all this upgrades. Travel that class you pay for.

It is winter there now so do not expect to sunny and warm weather.

I think that you're missing the point. As a non-rev I'm not paying for a "class."

Business Class has been doing quite well from SA - Georgia">ATL, and SA usually fills the cabin with revenue passengers, with room for just a few mileage upgrades. As a matter of policy, they generally don't do interline upgrades unless your category ticket specfically permits upgrade (i.e. duty travel)

Don't hold your breath. Even FF's have an extremely hard time getting mileage upgrades. Not sure about non-revs, but don't be too optimistic.

Forget it. I am an SAA employee spouse flying non rev regularly and it just doesn't happen.

It's a pity because business class on the 346 is mostly lie flats now and economy class seating is terrible, narrow and very tight pitch.

PA110,

SAA does not give upgrade endorsement for duty travel for its own staff anymore (due to abuse of the facility by a certain employee group). SAA employees can now apply for an upgrade endorsement for their private tickets once within three years (was changed from the annual upgrade endorsement).
