Congratulations Midwest! They are truly a unique airline: a premium-service smaller carrier based at a medium-sized market that doesn't have an exceptionally high per-capita income. Their home market and state are heavily dominated by an exceptionally brutally competitive Cartel-network carrier.
And despite more than one brush with bankruptcy, Midwest's royal blue colors are still in the air. Their existence is probably the reason WN is not in Milwaukee. But Midwest gives Wisconsin something of value too, and with their "saver" service they're adapting to give their home state something consumers also want--low fares in competitive markets.
MKE still has some big gaps in low-fare coverage--the New York area, Boston, St. Louis, Dallas. But Midwest has adapted to AirTran's and Frontier's successful entry and establishment in the MKE market. They'd probably adapt to JetBlue just fine, and possibly could even coexist with Southwest.
Less opulent (but still premium in comparison to typical network or LCC) in-flight service and saver service are the prices of surviving in today's revenue environment. Midwest is pulling it off, let's hope they continue to do so for years to come. Wisconsin should be very proud of their home state airline.
