More Delta Connection service to the Caribbean and surrounding regions. Delta Connection carrier ASA applied today to fly to Providenciales, Turks & Caicos:

http://dms.dot.gov/search/document.cfm?documentid=283531&docketid=17960

I'm assuming the service would be from Atlanta.

In the Caribbean/Bahamas, Delta Connection carriers currently operate or will soon operate:

ATL-FPO
CVG-MBJ (starts in September pending approval)
CVG-NAS
MCO-NAS

Actually, DL Connection applied a few weeks ago...they were approved today. DL Connection will fly the CRJ700 from ATL to PLS. However, during the winter months, DL will use a mainline plane (738 or 757) on Saturdays.

To add to the Caribbean/Latin expansion, DL also applied to start ATL to Belize City service. The service would be Saturday-only starting December 4th and use a 738.

One would think that since those flights spend significant amounts of time overwater that they'd have to provide life rafts and safety equipment. Even the CRJ-700 doesn't have a lot of overhead room. Where will they put the extra safety gear? The closet? Or block off a group of two seats?

Jcs17:

To my knowledge, as long as there is an airport capable of handling the aircraft within 50 NM of the planned flight path, then special overwater equipment is not required. Given that the flight with almost certainly shoot down Florida and then skim over over the Bahamas, I would think it's safe.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, but CVG-MBJ--there is a long portion of that trip has to be bit more than 50NM from the nearest airport.

I'm sure they've got it all figured out. If CO Express can do EWR-FPO with an ERJ, I don't see why CVG-MBJ in a CR7 would be a problem.

EWR-FPO can hug the Atlantic coast all the way to Florida and cut across the straits to Freeport. MBJ-CVG there is no coast to stay by--the flight would cut through the center of Florida and then fly over Cuba (they can't factor Cuba in for airports to land at).

I was wondering that myself, just how a Regional Jet can do the CVG to MBJ run? I am almost certain Cuba is not an airport considered for an emergency.

Considering that U.S. airlines fly charters to Cuba all the time, and the facilities are perfectly adequate, I don't see why it wouldn't be acceptable for emergency use.
