Inter Colombia Fleet Grounded For Not Paying Debt.

Hey guys.


This has been popping up in all national news sources, so I decided to bring it to the forums to see if we discuss about it.

According to one of the national newspapers http://www.eltiempo.com/, INTER's operations have been totally suspended until further notice due to the non-payment of debt they have with the national government.

The airline owes to the authorities 120 million pesos (USD44500) in airport rights, that must have been payed on May 20.

The company's CEO stated that the payment were not done due to lack of cash flow at the moment, but qualified the decision as unfair as the debt has enough guarantees that support it.

Anyway, this caused a total chaos in BOG yesterday, with many passengers and planes that were on the ground, and more flights being cancelled.

I flew Inter several times in the past.
I can assure you it's not the first time they are banned from using airport facilities. I remember once during the 1990's when they were banned for their poor air-security systems. One of their Dash it's still parking at a Matecaña's hangar in Pereira after a broken landing-gear incident in 1997.

Currently their fleet keeps being the oldest in Colombia. Inter has been draining cash out of these old DCs so as to say that they do not have cash to pay their liabilities.

Something's smelling wrong out there and may be it's not at Inter.

Personally I never flew in INTER (and not that I'm too interested in doing it) when they had flights to Medellin.

They are currently the only national carrier that don't fly to neither MDE nor EOH; nonetheless I keep hearing bad opinions about them...

Personally it's THE carrrier I wouldn't choose to fly...

I'm surprised they were still flying. I flew it once on a trip to San Andres island long time ago. To be fair, I have to say their food was great and delicious; actually one of the best I have had in flight ever!. Flight attendants were gorgeous and nice, I can't complaint. However, on the take off run, I thought the airplane was falling apart. What a loud roar!. The interior, although clean, seemed to be bonded together with glue Big grin

I was hoping Inter would acquire the B717 to upgrade its fleet, in fact, I heard that rumor long time ago. But it seems that airline is going down the drain.

C'mon, don't tell me that at this point you still haven't noticed that this is common to all colombian carriers...  Big grin

In fact, they still have plans to do it, but not exactly with 717s  Innocent . They brought a couple of ex-Frontier 737s that are currently parked at ElDorado waiting until the company decides to send some crew for training (lack of cash as well  Yeah sure ). I've heard they also have plans on changing the actual livery, going from royal blue to white fuselage and special national flowers painted on the tail. Not sure if this is true though.

Really sad to see how the south american aviation world is falling apart. But I guess that's the common effect of de-regulation and opening of markets. Just take a look at LAN....they are on the way up.

Yeah it's not good to see things like this happen, but I would go as far as calling it "falling apart". As you see, several airlines are equally doing efforts to get better (LA, AR, JJ), and those that have problems, are doing everything possible to solve them (i.e AV with the brazilian investor).

I have to agree with you saying that food was excellent. That was my impression too. However Inter has always operated this Laisser-aller policy. I never would hope a radical change in their modus operandi.

INTER has only several destinations left. They concetrated themselves on offering packages to leisure markets, so they mainly fly to places like San Andrés and Cartagena from Bogota and Cali. Not sure if they still fly to all of the following cities: Cucuta, Pasto, Popayan, Panama and Pereira (at one point they did). They don't fly to Medellin (as the main destination lacking from their network) nor to secondary cities like Santa Marta.

No wonder. I think they don't even have one. If I'm not mistaken they depend entirely on travel agencies' job. (They don't even appear as registered in the Aerocivil's schedules !)

They used to have one for sure; however they no longer have it. By the way, their website was very misleading, for instance, their motto was "The Young Jet Airline of Colombia", guess what? See the pictures above... What a joke!! If I'm not mistaken, their website showed a pic of a nothing less than a Boeing 747. Wow!!
