Except during the Kumbh Mela, when was the last 'normal' scheduled passenger flight operated from Allahabad? The city is large - it has 2 million inhabitants. It's also of great importance to Hindus: it is at the confluence of two of India's most important rives - the Ganges and the Yamuna (Jumna) - and the mythical Saraswati River is also believed to join them here. But that's not all: the sangam (the said confluence) is considered to have soul-cleansing powers and all pious Hindus hope to bathe here at least once during their lifetime. Is there any likelihood of regular passenger flights operating - and not just during the Kumbh Mela? If so, from which cities? It would be easy to say Delhi and Kolcata, but I'm not totally sure.

Well, there are many large Indian cities...  Smile I just doubt that there are enough pax to travel (although regular service with small aircraft - A320... - would do it, but is it enough for money-making??) to enable the route to eb profitable, since many people, especially Hindu pilgrims, take Buses or the Train

Yes, I am aware there are many large Indian cities, as I have travelled extensively within India - 51 weeks on one trip, for example. I am similarly aware of the use of trains (Allahabad-Delhi = 10 hours) and buses (no convenient buses to Delhi, but 5 hours to Lucknow and about 12 hours from there to Delhi). What industries are based in or around Allahabad? Would these necessitate business trips? Not many foreigners stop in the friendly city of Allahabad, which is a shame, as it's a worthwhile city, especially if you're partial to a Indian-style espressos and sidewalk cafes.

Curious: who named it Allahabad?

Freddie Laker ... May be at peace with his maker ... But he is a persona non grata ... with IATA

I don't know the answer to that question, ACAfan, but you could say 'Allah-a-bad'. Replace the 'a' with 'is', and you've got a funny thing. I do, of course, joke, so don't take it seriously.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Varanasi, near to Allahabad, is also home to about 2 million people and is, like Allahabad, of religious significance. Unlike Allahabad, it's quite a tourist town, yet there aren't many flights at all into Varanasi. I guess that goes someway to explain why there aren't any regular flights into Allahabad.

This site has some info:
http://www.airportsindia.org.in/aai/civil_enclaves/non-operational/allahabad.htm
It clearly says "NOn-operational"!

There are over 430 airfields in India, 120 of them capable of handling A320 sized aircraft. The biggest problem is lack of aircraft. One IC/CD gets the addl aircraft it has been seeking (43 airbuses and a dozen ATR42's), i expect to see a lot of these cities on the map soon!

Interesting website! It says Allahabad can hold a max. of two 320s. Is the lack of flights really due to a lack of aircraft or a lack of demand or both?

"when was the last NORMAL scheduled passenger flight operated from Allahabad"???

Well as per published schedules it was 30 min ago and there is another one in about three hours!

Air Sahara operates Delhi - Lucknow- Allahabad - Calcutta and return the same way on Mondays Wednesdays Fridays using a CRJ aircraft. On the other four days of the week it routes via Gorakhpur instead of Allahabad. These flights have been operating for nearly an year now and has been one of Aie Sahara's first CRJ flights.

Yes there has been a long gap before Air Sahara started, but until the early 1990s IC used to connect DEL with Allahabad using their erstwhile Hs 748s.

In Alexander Frater's recreation of the old imperial airways route "Beyond the Blue Horizon" he was supposed to have taken the DEL Allahabad flight as well, but then as I remeber from the book, his flight was rescheduled and he had to take the train!
