Some years back, Icelandair and Southwest operated some type of codeshare or alliance via BWI. I am interested in any details regarding this arrangement. For example, what type of arrangement was it, what was the period, why was it discontinued, etc.

NW declared the war on FI a few years ago when FI started flying to MSP. They were "not amused" that another airline would compete with the transatlantic KL/NW flights to their hub.
I even know NW did not allow discounted stafftravel (ID) for FI staff for a longer period, so this was quite serious!
NW might handle FI flights in MSP, being the main user of that airport and main handling agent...
In JFK for instance BA is the handling agent for FI, I used the BA Business Class lounge there when I flew FI. Have to say it was a very good one: TOP!!!

With all due respect, NWA and Iceland Air have indeed code-shared for years now...its more than just handling of ground ops, its a full out CODE-SHARE. In addition, NWA and Iceland Air have had ID discounts for each other for years also..I have flown on Iceland Air 3x times with the discount, and just last week coming out of LGW I had two Iceland Air crew members (seated in Business Class too I might add) on a "pass".
Not sure where or how your getting your information, but it is wrong.

Icelandair and Southwest did have an arrangement to fly passengers to BWI on Southwest system, than on to Iceland and Europe(Luxembourg, I think) on IcelandAir. This was arroung 1996-1997. Fares were arround $350-450. Since going to Europe this way involved at least one connection and one stop, and probably 2 connections, I can see why there were not many takers. It did seem pretty well publicized - the arrangement was prominantly posted on Southwest's website ("fly Southwest to Europe....Sort of"). However, 1996-7 was only the start of the web's popularization, so not nearly as many people were using that site then as are using it now.

Our staff was not able to book NW on ID basis for some time, but the "ban" has been lifted. Fi did not offer their staff to travel on ID basis with NW for some time.
I know NW does some handling for FI in the states nowadays again, but CODESHARING??? Please come with proof, with all due respect: this is some silly news you are posting here... I do not know of any FI flightnumbers within the States operated by NW, or am I doing my work at FI incorrect here? Please get your facts right! Btw: I work at FI Headquarters .

Also when requesting for some connections from KEF to NW destinations through eg. the NW hub MSP I do not get any codeshare flights... So where did you ever get the info that FI and NW codeshared???
Here is the complete list of handling agents for FI destinations in the USA and from which lounges Business class pax can make use of:
JFK/BA - Business pax can make use of British Airways Excutive Club Lounge
BWI/BA - Business pax can make use of British Airways Chesapeak Lounge
BOS/LH - Business pax can make use of Lufthansa Business Class Lounge
MCO/DL - Business pax can make use of Delta Air Lines Crown Room
MSP/NW - Business pax CANNOT make use of NW lounges!!! Instead FI
provides them with beverage vouchers...

I remember the Southwest/Icelandair "codeshares" also. They were from 4 or 5 Midwestern/Eastern cities to BWI on Southwest, then onward to Iceland and beyond on Icelandair. I remember because my old hometown of Louisville was one of the cities advertised (trust me, I'd remember something like that).
Fares were fairly cheap, IIRC, but must not have been very popular, as it seems this partnership just died a quiet death. Sure, the different systems were probably a major obstacle to success. However....
....my own opinion is that the markets in which this was promoted weren't "savvy" enough to differentiate low-frills Southwest (ok for a short flight) from full-product Icelandair (long flight!!!).
Plus, in how many persons' minds would Iceland be seen as a natural connection point for Europe (we're talking Americans here)?

What do you guys mean with "CODESHARE":
1. Just an agreement farewise, eg. getting "through fares" between destinations?
2. A full codeshare agreement, eg. a flightnumber under NW/FI prefix from SEA to MSP, under NW/FI prefix from MSP to KEF and under NW/FI prefix from KEF to AMS??? (Or under the alledged former WN/FI prefix?). A codeshare agreement means sharing costs and seats on these routes. FI only has one codeshare partner and that is SK on certain european routes...
FI may have cooperated with WN in the USA only to use them as feeder flights to their USA destinations, they did so as well with US for a while. Attractive low "through fares" from Europe to numerous destinations were offered in Europe with the combination FI/US (such fares also existed vice versa), but this was NEVER A CODESHARE OPERATION!!!

Funny this topic was brought up... while working at PHX today... I heard one of their agents announce "this is Southwest flight xxxx with service to Baltimore continuing on to Iceland out of the door marked C17". But no one I talked to seemed to know what that was about.

When is Icelandair coming back to Chicago?? It seems that when they dumped the DC8s in like 1989 or 1990, Chicago was also dumped. Was it because the 757 couldn't make the hop from KEF to ORD???
Actually IcelandAir used to be the Backpackers choice to get to Europe when all the other airlines were too expensive. Now (and unfortunately) it seems the opposite.
I have sold tickets thru our travel agency but using either BWI or MSP as a connecting point and the fares were not cheap. Granted it was an old fashioned "joint-fare" but it was still very expensive. I guess when you are flying good-ole girls (DC8s not FA's) you can afford to offer cheaper fares. Someone had to pay for those pretty new 757s.
I sure hope that FI decides to one day re-enter Chicago....Maybe with a 767?
