What Passenger 747 Service Has DFW Seen?

Given the current dearth of passenger 747 service at DFW, I was wondering what airlines have served DFW with passenger 747s in the past.

So far, I can remember the following:

Braniff
AA (747SPs to AA), Japan">NRT)
Thai (I think)

I'm sure there were others -- can anyone add to this list?

AA also operated 741 service from DFW until the mid-80's when the fleet was disposed. Most notable route was DFW-LGW.

Air New Zealand briefly operated DFW 742 service in 1988/89.

Panam, TWA, Ansett, Eastern.......AC next? Might be good for Canada.

Didn't Korean Air fly 747s there in the 1990s? Same with British Airways?

LH used to use the 742 to Frankfurt. This route is now operated using a 340 (I'm not sure which version). I'm not sure if the Frankfurt-DFW flight still continues on to IAH, but I know that when the 742 was used, LH would sometimes have it run Frankfurt-IAH-DFW, but at other times it went Frankfurt-DFW-IAH.

Sorry I can't use the AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA code, but I'm sure you see why.  Smile

For a short time in the late 90s, British Airways flew 744s from DFW to LGW. Also, don't forget the early 70s when Delta flew 741s into DAL.

Airline Lover,

I actually think that QF is looking for either the 345 or the 772LR so that they can serve DFW directly from SYD. I think that the AKL-DFW service with a 744 would be a good way to test this though before buying a whole new aircraft type.

The LH AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA flight no longer is one-stop DFW to IAH. Both cities now have nonstops operating with A340s; however the IAH flight is rumoured to be upgraded to a 747-400 this fall. We'll see if that comes to fruition.

In the late 1990s, LH began to operate four weekly nonstop Frankfurt-IAH flights; the other three flights went via DFW. Later, LH started offering a full daily schedule of nonstops to both DFW and IAH.

Braniff operated DAL-HNL, later DFW-HNL, non-stop in both directions with a 747-127 painted in an overall orange fuselage livery, appropriately nicknamed (among other monikers) "The Great Pumpkin."

During the early 1970s, American also operated its 747-123s on DAL/DFW-LAX. If my memory is correct, AA picked up DFW-HNL and DFW-LGW after the May 1982 demise of Braniff, both of which AA operated at times with 747s.

Braniff in the 1970's and early 80's before bankruptcy.

AA 747-100 in the 70's and 747sp in the 80's until MD-11 came on line.

Delta 747-100 briefly in the 1970's.

Thai international with 747-200 in the early 80's. Service via Seattle. Emptiest 747 in history!!

Air NZ briefly in the late 1980's with 747-200's.

BA in the 1980's. Then switched to DC-10's up until mid-90's. Now B777-200.

Lufthansa 747-200 until switched to Airbus 340-313 (current).

Korean airlines until 9-11, then service was held, then resumed with 777.

Sorry if I missed any other PASSENGER airlines folks!
Because of DFW's current situation, and the status of 747's in general, unlikely to see new 747 passenger service ever again!!

I have what probably is a very basic question to ask (and a bit off the topic). Could someone explain this code:

"AB) (AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA / FRF / EDDF)"

or is it:

"LH AB) (AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA / FRF / EDDF)" ?

Now, I know LH designated Lufthansa and i know the airport code for Frankfurt, but what about the rest of it?

Thanks in advance.

The LH flights also used to be on a 747Combi and they would run from AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA to DFW and then onto MEX. The plane then did a turn-around and did the same run, MEX to DFW and then DFW to AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA. I know this, because that was the first 747 flight I ever flew on. I flew in C class from DFW to MEX and back for a special "travel agent" rate of $25.00 RT. Real passengers would not have been allowed to fly this flight, it was only a special promotion for travel agents. I'll never forget, it took about 45 seconds to get airborne out of DFW towards MEX.

BA did fly some 747's back into DFW as substitutions for the B-777's when they first got the B-777's. BA ran out of qualified flight attendants at the end of the month and had to put in 747's instead.

Also, I just remembered -- when JAL launched DFW service in the late '90s, they began with a 744, then switched to an MD-11 before pulling out altogether. Saddening.

For sure TG did fly to DFW with 742. I flew with them from BKK to DFW in the 80s. The route was BKK-NRT-SEA-DFW. BKK-NRT-SEA sections were fully loaded. but from SEA to DFW there were about 40-50 PAX if i remembered correctly.
