Next week I will be flying into IAD, spending a few days in DC, and leaving from BWI. I have to get from IAD to the Sheraton National Hotel, and I was curious as to what is the best way to get there? One person I spoke to advised me to just use Super Shuttle, but what other options do I have? When I leave from BWI I plan on taking the MARC train from Union Station to the BWI Rail Station. How easy is that to do? I arrive at IAD at 4pm on Sunday July 4, and leave BWI at 6pm on July 7, so take that into account as some things may not operate on Sunday/National Holiday. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Matt Goldberg.

The MARC train from Union Station to BWI is a snap, and a shuttle bus runs you from the rail station up to the terminal.

I'm pretty sure that MARC train stops at New Carrollton (between DC and BWI) which is also a stop on DC's Metro system. Accordingly, you can then get to BWI from anywhere on the Metro system.

(Check out the Metro's site to be sure).

Don't know if Metrobus or Metrorail will be running on the 4th, but I suspect it will. I cannot imagine it being all that fun lugging your bags on the bus. Super Shuttle, operated by the FINE folks at Washington Flyer will not be cheap, but still cheaper than a cab to get to your hotel in Arlington.

Your hotel looks to be right by the Pentagon Metro station. But you will be attempting to make it across town at a peak travel time. I would say cab it to Union Station to catch the MARC there.

Although it's expensive, the Washington Flyer is certainly the easiest way to get from Dulles to your hotel. The other option is to take the Wash. Flyer shuttle to the West Falls Church metro stop, then schlep across town to Pentagon City mall where the Sheraton National Hotel has shuttle bus service. A long trek to begin with, probably to be made worse on July 4 with people zipping around trying to see fireworks.

To get to BWI, take the hotel shuttle back to Pentagon City and Metro to Union Station. Catch the MARC or Amtrak train to BWI from there. Piece o' cake.

Enjoy your visit to my old hometown!

Thanks guys I appreciate the help. I had spent time looking at the Metrorail system, and using the Washington Flyer Bus Service to get there. I did not know that the Sheraton National had shuttle service to the Pentagon City Station. I'll prolly just take the Metrorail from West Falls Church to Pentagon City. I looked at the map and had thoght that the Pentagon Station was actually closer, but was still 3/4 of a mile or so. When I head to BWI to come home, I will actually be coming from the Washington Court Hotel, does anyone know which metro station its near? I have riden the Metro/Tube in London, Paris, and Rome, and I am eager to see how the one in our nations capital compares.

The hotel website says it 2 blocks from Union Station. You can walk that easily with your bags.

Metrorail is nice, reasonably dependable, clean, but God awfully bland. If you like the look of uncolored and painted formed concrete then Metrorail will be your cup of tea. If you like orange vinyl seats and carpet you'll be even happier.

I've ridden both Metrorail and the London Underground. While Metro is nowhere near as extensive as the Underground, it is FAR FAR FAR nicer. Large roomy stations and platforms, though it does get crowded when you have that lovely mix of tourists and commuters. And roomy cars, though it does get crowded during the day.

My advice:

Do NOT give any money to the Washington Flyer. Why pay $8 to get to West Falls Church Metro when you can pay $2.50 to get all the way into the city on the Metrobus?

Metrobus 5A runs from IAD to Rosslyn and L'enfant Plaza metro stations. Just go to the metro website to see if the holiday schedule will fit into your plans. Rosslyn is on the blue line (with Pentagon City), so that'll be super-quick too.

Also, there is Metrobus service from the Greenbelt Metro to BWI. I've taken it once, but I can't remember the number...

Some MARC trains do stop at New Carrollton, some stop at every stop between Union Station and BWI, its hard to tell in advance.

Ew. The Metrobus is craptacular. The Washington Flyer bus is much nicer, and more frequent.

I've never had a problem with the cleanliness of a Metrobus.. and we're talking a 20-30 minute ride, not the Orient Express.....

Here is a schedule of the MARC Penn Line between Union Station and BWI:

http://www.mtamaryland.com/services/marc/schedulesSystemMaps/Penn_sch.pdf

The MARC trip isn't bad, but it can be a bit hairy if you're lugging lots of luggage. On most mornings, the shuttle bus between the rail station is PACKED, and sometimes you have to wait for another one. Also, the bus sometimes stops to pick up passengers at one of the remote parking lots, adding a few minutes to your trip.

The train ticket from Union Station to BWI is $6 (on MARC -- don't get confused and take Amtrak; it's $21). When you arrive at the rail station, there are usually several cabs waiting to take passengers to the terminal; their fare is a flat $5. I often find it worth the extra money just to take the cab, especially if I have lots of luggage or am in a hurry. The bus isn't bad, but it can take quite a while to wait for people to board and disembark at the terminal.
