What If Southwest Did Not Have Boeings?

Just wondering...how big do you think Boeing would be today if Southwest did not have the 737s in its fleet? or any boeing for that matter? I know that many other airlines operate the 737 and other boeings but Southwest is a pretty big customer ofthe 737.


The next generation of aircraft is just around the corner!

boeing would still be around, and possibly using some more of the MD - DC aircraft concepts, in new aircraft. I would love to see a brand new MD-80 , DC-9 aircraft, with new panel, and avionics.

Hey Perryland-are you really from Greenland? Have you been on any of the dogsled trips advertised on the Air Greenland web site-any suggestions/ And what's the best way to get their through Iceland or Denmark form US.

Here's the tale: As you know, USAir and Southwest were the co-launch customers for the Boeing 737-300.

Southwest discovered that Boeing had made USAir a better price on the aircraft than they (Boeing) were willing to offer Southwest.

Southwest did not much care for this idea, and told Boeing as much. Boeing hemmed and hawed and offered a few concessions but failed to match the USAir price.

It was about this time that CrAAndall had ordered 175 MD80s. So Southwest called up McDonnell-Douglas and basically said "we've been happy with the 737, and we really aren't in the market to switch, but we're beginning to think on it some. It'll be a long shot but we would like to see the MD80 and see what you can do for us."

McDonnell-Douglas took a MD80 down to Love Field and flew the WN folks around on it. Then they offered to sell WN the cookie-cutter standard AA version of the MD80 atthe exact same price that American was paying...somewhere around 14 or 15 Million, as I recall.

When Boeing found out about this they had people falling all over themselves at Love Field to do whatever was necessary to keep Southwest Airlines as a customer.

And in the long run it was probably good that they did. I have no doubt that WN would have done okay with the MD80s. But the special deal Boeing made USAir certainly kept them loyal Boeing customers, didn't it?

Then WN would be an all M80 or DC9 operator. I guess now it would be the 717. But a larger and smaller 717.

Just think if the M80's sold like the 737, what versions of that would we have?

The truth is Southwest almost was a MD80 operator.

They were almost a DC-9 operator, too. When originally looking at starting the airline, Kelleher and company were interested in both the DC-9-30 and the 737-200. Unfortunately, production problems at Douglas during the late sixties (which they were still catching up on in the mid-seventies) all but forced Kelleher to ignore the DC-9 in favor of the 737.

Good story, though. I was not aware of MDD's near-coup. Too bad...

Just think if the M80's sold like the 737, what versions of that would we have?

MDD did sell over 2000 DC-9/MD-80 variants (976 DC-9, 1100-plus MD-80/MD-90, and Boeing has sold 125-plus 717s). Most of that was before 1995, meaning the DC-9/MD-80 sold at a slower but comparable rate to the 737 during the first three decades of production.

If WN wasn't around, Capt. Phallus up there would be paying ~$1500 to fly. In fact, since everyone else would have to as well, there wouldn't be as many airline pax and Capt. Phallus wouldn't even have a job "working for a major airline" like he claims.

Even though WN has ordered over 450 737s in the last three decades, this only accounts for 8% of total 737 sales. WN does account for 11% of 737NG sales (274/2301), but it isn't to say Boeing would be in the dumps if it were not for WN.

If Southwest hadn't bought Boeing 737s, and they had started just now today, I would imagine that they would've bought A318s, A319s, and A320s. I leave out the A321 because Southwest has never been a big fan of the longer versions of the 737....The A318s, A319s, and A320s and A321s are really just like the 737...they are variants of a single type of aircraft. They look the same, have the same wings, virtually the same engines, they only differentiate in length...so that is why I theorize Southwest might have chosen Airbus instead of Boeing had they not been pleased with the 737s.
