During the last month Qatar Airways and Emirates started new longhaul-services to VIE. Does anyone of you have infos if there are other new routes planned to/from VIE? Not important what airline or destination, I just want to know if there are some airlines thinking about adding VIE to their network... Thanks !!

OS have recently increased their flights to Cairo from 5 to 6x weekly and have began code-sharing with Egyptair on their 4x weekly flights (MS802/OS7141). Bringing a total of 10x weekly flights.

OS has also started a codeshare's agreement with AI (Air India) on its VIE/India flights!.....VIE is growing very well because it's become a new important and very efficient hub in the hurt of the new Europe ( I'm speaking about East Europe); so VIE does very well as east european gateways linking espeacially east to west (firstly Europe to Africa & Asia) !

VIE airport should be really improved if they are going to be the hub between east and west. Nowadays it isn't as attractive airport as Zurich or Munich for example. The Schengen side is quite OK, but non-Schengen side is far below good standards. The Non-Schengen side is small, not good facilities at all (few toilets, 2 small cafe/bars) and seems to be quite old. There is only few windows to apron as well.. Also arrival hall (landside) is very dark, small and outdated... just like arriving to some dirty subway station.

In overall, VIE isn't one of the best airports, but it is quite OK, especially the Schengen side like I told. If you travelling only from Schengen country to other, then VIE is good airport for transit.

For those, who are interested in VIE's plans for the future...
There is a "masterplan 2015", which includes a third runway, a new terminal, ... http://english.viennaairport.com/masterplan.html

Futurestar68,

Thanks for the info... It is good that they are planning well in advance new capacity for increasing demand. That is good long term project and definitely will change VIE airport a lot as well. Excellent that authorities have clear visions of future and plans as well, because we don't want new "LHR effect" of course (where new 5th terminal should have been completed many years ago).

2015 is still quite far away though, however I believe the airport authorities have planned some short or medium term improvements as well there which will solve especially those issues considering the non-Schengen area. Any info of those?

Best regards,
FinnWings

FinnWings...

The new terminal project, called SkyLink, is planned to be opened in 2008
(150.000m², 96 new check-in counters, 51 gates for both, schengen and non-schengen, 8 docking positions for short- and medium-haul aircrafts and 9 docking positions for bigger aircraft, in the case that an A380 visits VIE (I don't that will happen very soon...) 2 positions will be used for it...

Hope I could help you...
Greetings, Martin
