I thought this was pretty cool. All you need is a Mac, an iSight and $9.95 (for 30 minutes... $29.95 for an entire flight that lasts more than 6 hours).

Actually, some LH planes offer the wireless Internet on board.
Prices are €10 for 30 mins and €30 flatrate per flight.
But actually, it is not a Mac required, it works with any computer with WiFi equipment and webcam, also Windows laptops.
They install that on their entire longhaul fleet step by step.
Also SK has decided to use this system, and a hand full of airlines more, I do not recall all.

The video conference was using the onboard wireless system at the prices I (and you) quote. Hence the "iChatAV at 35,000 feet " title for the article.
This video conference used an iSight, which requires a Mac. Other web cams offer video conferencing, but not at the quality video level of the iSight.

Connexion's airline customers, which include the Scandinavian Airlines System division of SAS AB, Japan Airlines System Corp., All Nippon Airways Ltd. and Singapore Airlines Ltd., will initially offer the service to passengers through Wi-Fi.
