air arabia (G9), the LCC based in Sharjah, UAE has started serving Dammam (DMM), Riyadh (RUH), and Jeddah (JED) in Saudi Arabia. air arabia will make history as it will be the first low cost carrier to serve the Saudi market. It seems that the pressure they put on the Saudi Civil Aviation Authority has finally paid out.

The advertised one-way fares as follows:
RUH-SHJ $94
JED-SHJ $160
DMM-SHJ $40
This is really cheap when compared with Saudi Arabian Airlines or Emirates.

Their schedule will be as follows:

Sat,Tue
SHJ-RUH 1030-1115
RUH-SHJ 1200-1440

Sun,Wed
SHJ-JED 0830-1015
JED-SHJ 1100-1445

Mon, Thr
SHJ-DMM 1030-1045
DMM-SHJ 1130-1345

Air Arabia already made history as the first LCC in the Middle East. MenaJet still is trying to launch itself in the region.

Soups, Air Arabia has a small fleet of A320s. They've had two for a while, but I think they may have now got three or four.

This is great news!!! I am pleased that the Saudi government realized that competition is not evil.

Certainly good news, but the recurring ‘problem’ is that all of its routes are normally served only twice-weekly. Why is this? Surely it’s not due to a lack of demand? Surely such infrequencies would be somewhat inconvenient and so would discourage would-be passengers? Isn’t Sharjah – which is a 20- or 30-minute drive from Dubai – sufficiently close to encourage people to drive there and (probably) fly more cheaply, like easyJet at Luton and Stansted?

Elcapi1980, you can book tickets from their website

http://www.airarabia.com

They have recently increased their Alexandria (Egypt's 2nd city) flights to 7x weekly, with extra flights this summer. End of August will see them have 12x weekly flights, easily making it their busiest route  Big thumbs up

Alexandria's a very pleasant city, even though when I visited it was experiencing something of a hurricane.  Wink/being sarcastic I had me good old fish n chips Egyptian style - and all my food virtually covered the table (including the 'free' items), yet it came to less than 5 GBP.

I totally agree with you. One reason would be the lack of aircraft to support more frequencies. Or maybe, Saudi Arabian Airlines had something to do with that!!! I wish in the future they would have daily flights.

The flight times look great but I notice there are no Friday flts which is, naturally, the day that everybody wants to fly.

I might be wrong but I don't think there are such things as Low Cost Airports in the Middle East as all airports are Government owned and run.

Air Arabia is an interesting concept and it will be interesting to see how long it lasts.

Babybus,

This makes it more logic that SV had a hand in this. On Wed and Fri SV usually operates the 744 on the RUH and JED - DXB flights. EK switches to the 777 on those days from the A330.

You are right, there are no low cost airport in the ME. I would add that many would now consider Sharjah as moving in that direction.

What about Medinah ? Is there any attempts to serve this holly city ? The airport turns international, AFAIK, only during the Hajj season !!!

Ts-ior,

No plans to serve MED yet. I believe MED is busy during the Hajj season only.

In most Middle Eastern countries the weekend is on Fridays and Saturdays.

All Gulf countries' weekends are Thurs-Fri, with the exception of Qatar, who recently adopted the Fri-Sat weekend.
