On a recent trip I was able to see Delta's Customer Service Screens and other automation products. Wow! The screens at the gates were great and answered all kinds of basic questions regarding the flight, standby list, delays, etc. One (1) gate agent was able to board a full 757, and we left on time.
Seems like they've got a good thing going.

Yea, I think it's awesome how they do things... On 3 of my 4 flights (with the exception of a few delay updates via P.A.) all boarding and general questions was done/were answered by computer. I love all their Plasma screens with any information you would want. Extremely efficient and very high tech too... Good Job Delta  Laugh out loud

I find the automated boarding announcements absolutely obnoxious, especially when DL (connection) is boarding a 328 jet and the calls for rows 12,10, and 5 (or whatever) are so close together. They used to just do general boarding many times (in CLT). I think I may shoot myself when I am in ATL in August.

I have to agree with "Cubsrule" I could do without the sound. The monitors are great but while waiting for a SONG flight back to FLL from LAX last month I just couldn't wait to board the plan cause the guy was giving me a headache. And it was bad enough that at the same time planes were leaving to Maui, Cincinatti and Honolulu all around the same time so the voice just didn't stop.

I really am trying to get out for July 4 so I can hear this voice first hand. I don't like the idea at all and from what I hear, it is a terrible voice. My recommendation is to write or e-mail DL, telling them what you though about the voice. I really miss the days (last year) when they had 2 agents boarding a 767-400, making most of the announcemnets (telling people to look at the screen, as well).

I hope I get to ATL soon, when I need a good headache!

Agents are in control of the gate audio. If an agent elects to board a FRJ 2 rows at a time then that is at their discretion. However if they want to board all rows then all they have to do is click all rows. The voices are also supposed to alternate gate to gate to help avoid confusion.

I have been at ATL, DFW, and CVG when the gate agent did not use the automated announcements. We never heard any pre-board annoying announcements either. Must just have been their preference.

I transferred in ATL on Monday and found the system to be quite nice and informative. The information that comes up on the screens in a passengers dream, if you know what you are looking at.

The only problem I had was at times I couldn't hear the automated voice. I had just come in on another flight and my ears were clogged. I did feel proud of myself when a guy (frequent flier looking) asked me what zone they were boarding and I pointed to the screen.

Give it time and everyone will know what is going on.

How long will it be until everyone does this? Not to long I hope.

I remember seeing them for the first time and thinking, my god, thats brilliant. I mean it. For some reason I felt more at ease being able to see that my zone had not been called yet as opposed to just waiting for the agent to call it.


BTW-Is that why the ceiling is all torn up on A @ ATL?

The screens are great, I agree....but I think it is the voices that are getting the complaints

DL wants the travel experience to be consistent, so because of that the agent doesn't have the choice to use gate audio or not. It is required to be used if available. However it does go down from time to time and there are no recorded delay announcements, so those have to be done manually. Right now I think it is in 36 stations.
Personally I prefer to do them manually as it adds a personal touch, however at the same time I don't mind the automated announcements as it does save time if busy.

The gate agent can board manually if he/she wants to, it's up to them...
And, there is a woman's voice also, that alternates to avoid confusion at nearby gates.

Also for ATCBoy, the ceiling is out on alot of the concourses for renovation.. They haven't been getting much work in lately, because they can only work after Midnight, when no one is around, and lately alot of people have been sleeping in the concourses due to cancellations and such.

Unfortunately agents don't have the choice whether to use gate audio or not. It is easy to change from automated to manual however it is only to be done during extreme circumstances. Cities or agents that are using gate audio on their discretions are doing so against DL's wishes. DL is having weekly meetings about gate transformation. Outside of going over the newest aspects to be added to the gates they reiterate every week about how team leaders are to make sure that all agents are using the tools DL is providing and investing in.

Didn't know that.. In FLL, D7 (767-300 to ATL) left about 2 hours before my flight, and they were manually boarding, while my flight boarded using the computer. Same with my flights from Atlanta. I walked by gates in A,B,& T that were manually boarding (I think they ranged from MD88's to 767's) while mine again were boarded using the computer. Interesting info though. Thanks for the correction.

I normally fly DL for a variety of reasons. However, in May I flew CO from LAX to JAN with a transfer at IAH. The airport experience was so totally different. DL really has it down!

Dang, it was HOT in concourse A when I was in ATL a couple of weeks ago! I think some of the A/C is out where they are doing renovations. There were large fans out but that only helped a bit.

Technically, although a gate agent has the ability to decide whether to board manually or automated, Delta policy says it is to be done "by the book." Now, depending on which station you work at, or which shift you are working, I recommend you do it whichever way works best for the customers and yourself.

I have always thought the Gate Information Display Screens were a big hit. Delta has them in almost every station and they are really nice. You don't even want to know what Delta kicked out for each and every one, it will make you sick to your stomach. But I have never heard anything other than good comments about them.

As far as the gate audio announcements, they do not bother me, although I was against it initially. The voices are clear and are not a repetitive bleeting like you think when you hear it is recorded. It does the job though, it makes periodic announcements that would apply to many passengers, such as infants, strollers, carry on baggage, etc. It keeps the questions down to a minimum instead of being berated with the same questions while trying to work, whether that is clearing the upgrade list, the standby list, deciding whether you will be in an overbooked situation, trying to change seat assignments, etc. And it helps greatly during the boarding process so that you can keep the boarding going, instead of taking time out in order to make the announcements yourself.

I can only imagine what Delta paid >.< Atlanta (even with all the renovation) is most likely the most wonderful airport I've ever been in. Seeing the huge wall of Plasmas that during the day are all filled with Delta's departures is awesome. The layout of ATL is great, though the train could have been more efficient (could be longer to hold more pax), since it's so crowded alot of the time. It beats the hell out of St.Louis (even at it's peak with TWA).

Not quite.

Out of 81 DL stations that are renewed GIDs monitors are only in ATL, Hartford, BOS (Terminals B and C), CVG, DCA, EWR, FLL, JAX, JFK, LAX, LGA (Delta and Marine Air Terminal), MCO, ORD, PBI, RSW, SEA, SFO, SLC, and TPA.
SEA and Hartford received them with the opening of their new terminals.

Out of those 81 stations, 31 have Gate Audio. ATL, BOS, CLE, CLT, CVG, DFW, GSO, GSP, HOU, HSV, JAN, JFK, LAX, LIT, LGA, MEM, MLB, MOB, MSY, ORD, ORF, PDX, PHX, RDU, SEA, SFO, SLC, TPA, TUL and just recently FLL and SDF. It is taking longer than expected to implement Gate Audio in all renewed stations.

There are still 12 stations that haven't gone through airport renewal of which only one is scheduled to receive GIDs screens (assuming the airport allows DL to install them).

They had automatic gate announcements boarding my flight JFK-NCE back in April - it was pretty good, although the system doesn't take into account non-English speakers (of which there were a fair few) - that and the zone boarding system (which I incidentally like) was very confusing for people more used to being boarded by row numbers or simply scrumming the gate as is the system for most AF flights.

I first saw the new FIDS monitors in MCO. They are really cool...along with a map of the airport, codeshare information. Delta deserves an award. (No I don't work for them!)
