Anyone Ever Taken An Aerobatic Flight? Comments?

Hey guys,
For my birthday this year (July 18th) I have been given the ultimate gift. My parents have bought me some time in a Boeing Stearman which has been a dream of mine for a long time now. The Stearman was and is such a solid aircraft and I've always been enamored by them. I've done a lot of flying, but have never went up to do aerobatics (or for that matter I've never been up in a plane even capable of aerobatics). What I was wondering is, has anyone else ever done anything like this? If so, was your experience good? Any words of wisdom?

Yes, I have. In an AT-6 Texan.

Is it a good time? Saying that it's a good time is the understatment of the century!!

I will offer a bit of advice though, if you get motion sick easily, keep the ride short or wait a decent amount of time between each maneuver. If you never have been motion sick before but start feeling a little queezy, don't be afraid to speak up. I'm sure the pilot would rather fly straight and level for awhile rather than get the inside of his beautiful airplane messed up.  Big thumbs up

I do some serious aerobatics in a Yak every once in a while and in a Pitts once. 7G's is all I've pulled though. I love every second of it. I even came away with a good picture.

I don't know if I have the guts to do aerobatics in an open cockpit airplane though. I also fly a Stearman every once in a while and it is one of the coolest things I've ever done. Hopefully you will enjoy yourself, it's something most people never get to do.

For my 25th birthday I got a flight in a Yak-52 with the late and great Pierre Holländer.

WOW! 5 positive G's, about 1.5 negative. Very nice. Started with a roll just after takeoff.

My only regret is not bringing a barf bag. Despite following the horizon as much as I could, I felt really naseous after the second Cuban Eight. We had to turn back. Darn it... But I would do it again in a second.

Luckily I have an iron stomach and enjoy rollercoasters and the such so I think I'll be okay with the whole airsickness aspect.

Besides having a cool a.net nickname (gotta love the '57), the Texan's are very cool. I've seen a lot of them at airshows. They are neat aircraft.

I'm really hoping it will be like what I can picture in my mind. It just looks so neat, and the fact that it's going to be in a Stearman just makes it that much more exciting.

Thank you. Just to warn you it took me ten shots to get that one right and three different spins. I was pulling 2-4G's at the time and had a problem holding the camera steady. Also watch were you place it. You wouldn't want it to float out of the aircraft when pulling negative G's (so don't place it around your neck). I'm sure the shots would turn out awesome with not canopy in the way. The second I get my license I plan on driving up to to Vansant and getting a check out in one of there Stearmans. Sure seems like a cool place.

I do!!! I fly airplanes and gliders and prefer to do some maneuvers on gliders.

Van Sant has been rated on of the best grass strips in the US. I've driven past quite a few times, and I'm finally going to get the chance to stop in. Yeah...I figure I'll just keep a death grip on my camera and hope for the best. If I lose it, well good riddens to bad rubbish. Just be the impetus to get the Digital Rebel that I've been drooling over.

I have ridden some pretty violent rollercoasters. Never had a problem. But this was something else. Apparently you get used to it after a while (longer that one flight unfortunately).

We still had time to do a couple of loops and rolls, a hammerhead (whohooo!) and some other stuff so I wasn't really unhappy. But if there had been a barf bag available I would have puked my guts out and asked him to continue. Overall, it was really great and I would do it againin a second!


BTW, for those of you who don't know, Pierre Holländer was the premier aerobatic pilot in Sweden, and in charge of "Pierre Holländer's Flying Circus", basically a group of pilots and planes doing airshows. A great guy. He died last year when the wing of his Spirit of St Louis replica snapped off during a show. He went before his time.

I've done loads of aerobatics in Chipmunks when I was in the Air Training Corps.

One flight, I asked the pilot (who were all RAF volunteers) if he had ever done an airshow display. He said that he used to display the Phantom many years before, and said that he hadn't flown that routine for a while and would I like to do it ? "Shit Yeah"...........so off we went and did the whole of his display routing in our little Chipmunk that he had done in a Phantom !!!. Afterwards he said he had enjoyed it so much, did I feel upto doing it again.............YEE HA.........

After the last manouver, which was a basic stall turn, the engine failed to throttle back up as we were coming out of the dive. We levelled out and he was closing and reopening the throttle repeatedly and that engine just would not come back to life. I was so exctited as it was getting to the point where we were going to either make a forced landing or bail out !!!!. He began to make the "MAYDAY" call to RAF Finningley where we were flying from, but when he said it for the second time, the engine all of a sudden came back to life. The mayday was cancelled and we hop footed it back to the airfield pronto !!!.

Moral of the story............Don't try a display routine designed for a Phantom in a Chipmunk !!! - especially twice in a row.

Flying a Stearman at Vansant! Flying doesn't get much better than that.

I have flown about 10-15 hours of aerobatics. It's awesome. Mine was in an Avions Mudry Cap-10.

It's great to fly in a way that you can really see what a plane can do, to the limits. I suggest bringing a barf-bag just in case you need it. I would feel bad vomiting on a Stearman! I am quite sure that I would not like flying aerobatics daily, though, because the constant positive and negative G-forces would get old fast (I’m referring to planes on the level of the F-15 here, however).

I also suggest not bringing your camera, just because I think you'd not enjoy the flight as much if you were concentrating on getting good pictures. Take cool pictures another time, and enjoy this one.

As for VanSant, what a neat little airport. As the website says, it's like going back in time to the 1930s seeing all those old planes flying around. The airport has a great atmosphere to it; people just go there to hang out and watch the planes on nice days. I went gliding there a few years ago and I've been there a few other times and always look forward to going back.

Actually you are probably more likely to get ill in a small aerobatic plane than in an F-15. The aerobatic planes pull much more negative G, and as much or more positive G. Also, the aerobatic pilots do much more gut-wrenching stuff like sudden attitude changes and eyeballs out maneuvers.

Rolling a TF-51 Mustang between towering cu'nims over Florida was fun. The Yak-52 is another great one. Been to +4.8/-2.2G on the Yak, including a pretty long tail-chase, and on another occasion, down to 20ft over the surf down the long stretch of deserted beaches between Arcachon and Bayonne in France and inverted through a valley in the Pyrenees!
Flew in formation (in a PA-11 Cub) with a blue and yellow PT-17 Stearman over the Argentine pampas one evening a few years back. No aeros, as the Stearman pilot preferred not to, but still a magical sight against a sun setting over endless wheat, corn and sunflower fields and undulating sierra near MDQ.

When you do go up, I'd recommend wearing a long sleeve shirt so that you can stuff the barf bag up your sleeve so it is handy incase you need to use it.

Ive been up in a skybolt. Did quite a few tricks.....GREAT ride. Did 2 hammerhead stalls, outside and an inside loop, few barral rolls, did a couple of low passes over the rwy while blowing smoke. We pulled 4.5g's.....words cant explain how i felt that day.....plus i was only 15.

My only aerobatic experience as a passenger was in a T6 Texan (Harvard) and I hated it - Rolls, Loops, Stall turns and Cuban eights - particularly the latter. I love aerobatics when I'm doing the flying  Smile

A few years ago I went flying in a Zlin 242 (N9MZ) with a guy I met online. We did a few aileron rolls and a few hammerheads. It wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it would be, and it was a lot of fun. I'm not sure if I'd want to do a loop though :-p

Yes, we are still on for the trip.. I 'reserved' a brand new Freestar about a month ago. So unless something major happens, all lights are green.  Big grin

BTW, my trip to SLC was fantastic. HP, their First Class and the cabin crew were great. The aircraft were clean and nice! The flight crew of the 3 A320s I flew weren't very nice, but the crew of the one 737-300 I flew from SLC to PHX were the best! I did miss out on flying on a 732, but I did see one while I was in PHX, waiting to the trip back to PHL. HP only has 5 left in the fleet, so time is running out...

PS.. The A320 I flew home in on Saturday was N626AW.. One of BN's old ones.. How 'bout that!

I told ya (or more like showed ya at our last meet) that I've been on 621AW. Considering that they're some of the older A320's around, HP has done a wonderful job outfitting the interiors. I'm glad that your trip went well---that way you can't blame me for influencing you to fly HP if you had a really bad experience. That's about what you get with them. Clean planes, on-time service, and your bags get there when you do. I don't think that you can ask for much more (well, service is another issue...but as long as they keep the drinks flowing I don't have much of a problem. Trust me, I'm not missing out when they serve those trays of gruel that they like to call food). I can remember the days when HP served beef and bean burritos between PHX and PHL. NOT THE BEST IDEA!!

I have done a bit of Aerobatics over the years in a wide variety of planes.

Since a Stearman is open cockpit make sure you get the Pilot to roll it over and fly upside down (Depends if it has inverted fuel and oil system) If is doesn't just get them to do a very slow roll, look towards the ground and then you realize that there is nothing between you and the ground.

At that moment you then quickly grab onto something as a reaction. I did that in an Acrosport II. The one below actually.



I need to go in another open cockpit but this time hold my hands above my head, well below in theory since your upside down.

I'm sure you'll love that experience. I'll always remember my first aerobatics flight. At the time I was just a Cessna 150 private pilot, and I had the incredible opportunity to fly on the backseat of an Alphajet.

The pilot began with a low level cross country flight, and ended with aerobatics. That was awesome. I didn't understand anything though. We did rolls, loops, Cuban eights, etc...

Goboeing: so you have Cap-10's in the US? That's the aircraft I got my aerobatics rating with; a very nice aircraft IMO, but pretty hard to land! The worst thing I underwent was an inverted loop. We pushed minus 3g's; felt like my eyes would pop out of my head!

Since then, I've flown aerobatics on my own in Embraer Tucano's and Dassault Alphajets. Starlionsblue's right: military aerobatics are somehow smoother than civil aerobatics, and you avoid negative g's, since you never really need them and they're not comfortable.

I've never flown an open cockpit aircraft, and I think that must be an awesome experience when you're upside down, and see nothing between you and the ground. I suppose I'd double-check my harness...
