Service Entry: For Or Before Market?

When or how are planes entered into service, are they made to enter before a market gets fully developed or during a market? If before, wouldn't that be a gamble? If during, how do airlines/manufactures make a profit if something else had already been there and this plane would be a, as someone mentioned in another topic, a second-to-market product?

I'll ask the question differently before it goes under:

I would suppose all manufactures research trends and listen to their immediate customers (airlines or whoever) for their input or whatnot before deciding to push forward.

I guess that with the A380 it seems to me that the company is almost making a market that may not or could not have existed by itself had Airbus not decided to go ahead with the plane. The phrase, "if you build it they will come" comes to mind.

Could that work on just about any concept PROVIDED there was an investment for it?

Like if a group of individuals convinced another group of folks with money to sign off on a project that they were able to build, will people automatically eventually purchase it if it meets their goals or that they believe they will prosper with it?
