I see the Der Spiegel thread has been removed. It makes me wonder what the forum would have looked like when the ATC workers were fired, in the 80's, I believe. Would political comments have been accepted? I believe the dismissal of the controlers was inappropriate, to say the least, and almost devastated the industry. In order to remain objective, do you think you could post and not mention any names or political affiliation? In other words, did it hurt the industry, and how so?

OK... I'll bite. What did you think of the actions of the controllers? At least try to debate instead of putting your best indignant pout forward.

I thought it was the wrong decision to fire the controllers because the FAA did not have qualified personnel to replace them. I also felt too many lives were endangered by the decision. Furthermore, I felt the decision was aimed at unions in general, not just PATCO.

You didn't answer the question. What did you think of the actions of the controllers?

I think the controllers did the only right thing!!!!!!!
As long as there is a chance of talking about differences between every party they should take chance of it. As far as I know American controllers in the past where forced to fight and to stop talking...(they did the right thing)so they been doing it right.
In Germany they are nearly at the point of strike, but not in terms of payment but in terms of being accepted as a union. German controllers found a union and they are to strike for it but DFS (GermanNavigationalAirServices) will never go into talks with this union until some court forces them to do so.
The controllers are weak picks that have to take the "airspaceshit" all the great "airspaceplaners" give them to handle a coup of traffic...
