It seems UA & AA got quite an advertisement in the season premiere of the Amazing Race tonight. I lost count of how many times I heard & saw "United Airlines..American Airlines" I wonder how much they had to pay/how many free tickets they had to give up for this publicity?  Smile Rock on UA & AA..

Support Airliners.net - become a First Class Member!

It might be done as both hard dollars and what is known as soft dollars, i.e. free tickets in exchange for product placement and mentions.

American Airlines is an official sponsor of the show, I don't think United Airlines is. If they were to charge airlines to be on thier show, then there would be problems. It is free product placement, for the most part.

I am sure we will see some other airlines featured, even if they are not official sponsors. In the past this show has raced through South Africa and Australia and we wont see the AA birds there. I have read that Tanzania is a definite stop this year for the contestants.

I saw some people from the "Amazing race" last year in Rotorua, NZ. I was thrilled at the time but there were no cameras there. I got a photo with one of them. I hope it's not some cheap NZ copy show.
Airlines featured on the show depend on the routes that the race requires. I remember seeing them flying airlines like SQ, UA, LH, AL, LX etc... so it is also good publicity for them, especially when they show the shots taken from the cabin (ie. shows off the IFE etc...).

A bit OT, but...

In each of the previous seasons of the Amazing Race, the teams had to go to countries where Americans need visas to visit (Brazil and India come to mind, maybe there are others?).

Anyone know how they managed to just get on a plane and fly into Rio or Bombay or wherever? These visas have to be applied for in advance in the home country and can take a few days to be processed?

Unless the teams were made to get these visas before the race started, but then so much for the surprise!

Any clues, anyone?

As far as the Visas go, the shows producers must secure them ahead of time for the participants. They may have them sign papers knowing they are for visas but not knowing which country or they could apply for several visas to different countries not knowing which they will actually be going to.

Frankly 7E72004, your question only strengthens the dreadful image others have of us as 'ugly Americans'. I would expect a vastly greater understanding of the world from a 26-35 year old 'attorney from Indianapolis'; rather sad...

Uruguay is not Paraguay; the two countries do not bear any resemblance to each other, either historically, culturally or socially. As Peteinmiami has pointed out, Uruguay is on the S.Atlantic, Paraguay is landlocked in the middle of the continent.

Culturally, Uruguay could just as well be an extension of its neighbor to the west, Argentina, while Paraguay has a completely different cultural and social background.

Also, United flies its 763 to Montevideo (that's the capital city of Uruguay, BTW) and took over PanAm's flights in 1992. PanAm had been flying to Montevideo since the end of WWII and actually flew 747's there in the 70's/80's.

Also, while I love 'Amazing Race' and believe the show does a GREAT job of showing the realities of modern day travel, it can never replace the real thing.

Pdposl...i really take offense from your comment...i did not catch the entire show so i was not exactly sure what country they were talking about. And with comments like that only strengthen the views of many outside of this country that Americans are snobs...unfortunatley you have to add to it. Now run along and play with your barbie dolls.

IIRC, that is exactly what they do. I remember reading an article or interview somewhere. They have the contestents apply for tons of visas, most of which they never use.

7E72004,

The only people taking offense from anyone's comments here are those outside the US who throw up their arms in dispair when an American makes a comment such as:

Does United really operate the 747 from Miami to Uruguay/paraguay (whatever that country was *lol*) ??

What's so *lol* about confusing the names of two nations?

How could my commentary be perceived as even remotely 'snobbish'?

How can a 26-35 'attorney from Indianapolis' not be just a bit more perceptive and sensitive to people outside the US?

The Amazing Race 6 starts production next month and will air in late fall. The thing that sucks it the timeslot: 9PM ET/8PM CT on Saturdays! Grrr! Luckily, I love in the CT (Chicago) during the fall, so it shouldn't be that hard to catch since its on early, but I just hate it when networks put good shows on Saturdays.

Oh yeah, and for those that want to apply...

http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race_application/

The app is probably for season 7. CBS has not signed a seventh season, but the show gets healthy ratings (about 10-11M), has won an Emmy, and is very cheap to produce, so it is very likely.

It will be replayed, sometime on saturday, check the CBS sched.

UA also flies their Montevideo route via Buenos Aires, something that most people did not know.

I have always wondered about the visas, and also when the contestants say "we got the last two seats on the plane" what about the cameraman for each team???

My guesses as to the next countries they will visit is as follows:

Argentina, Iceland, Sweden/Norway/Finland, Tanzania, India, Cambodia, China, Fiji and back to the U.S.

They have not done China yet and I wouldnt be surprised if they showed up in Shanghai or Hangzhou or Beijing, that would be sweet. I remember when they were in Singapore and how much I was freaking out because it reminded me of my home away from home  Sad

UA and AA got a lot of free airtime. Thrifty should use Vincent in some commercials now.

Best of luck on your application for next year's 'Amazing Race'; I am crossing my fingers for you guys!

It would great to have a fellow a.net member 'run the race' and win; and provide a bunch of great stories for everyone.

Sq452:

I think they have done China on AR. They were definitely in Beijing and on the Great Wall. Can't remember what season, though.

Wish they would try going westbound, though. I guess it doesn't work logistically, but it would be cool to see them do, say, EZE-SCL-PPT-AKL (is that right - does Lan Chile still fly from SCL to AKL with a stop in Polynesia somwhere?).

Love the show, though. TiVo was made for stuff like this to catch all the little details that go by so fast and pick up on clues.

Kurt,

LAN's flight to Sydney only stops in Aukland, so the route is SCL-ACK-SYD.

However, you are absolutely correct in that LAN does have a flight to Papeete, but it is completely separate from the N.Zealand/Australia flight.
The LAN (IATA code:LA) flight to Papeete, Tahiti actually stops at Easter Island, Chile, midway in the Pacific so the routing is: SCL-IPC-PPT.

LA has a great set of route maps on its website: www.lan.com

Fellow A.netters:
A couple of notes. First, when someone applies for a visa to a foreign country, they must be physically present. So CBS cannot apply for them. Second, neither AA nor UA (if I'm not mistaken) operate a flight straight to Montevideo. It is usually via Rio or Buenos Aires. However, the show mentioned a "longer layover" and a "shorter layover". This was probably the stop in one of those places.
The reason they choose two airplanes is to separate the teams. Imagine if the entire group flew together in one airplane. What drama is that? So, they probably tell the contestants that they have "8 seats on United, 8 seats on AA" (for example) so that's why they say "I got the last two seats on this flight". The flights were not full, from what I could see. Remember, when they checked in they used a "reference code" or something like that. The same was done with the ferries. They had one at 8, one at 8:30, one at 9. No doubt the ferries take more people but these are the obstacles that the producers place on the contestants.
I enjoyed the show.
So how come no one has made any comments in my thread about the new TV show on NBC? Take a look at the threads.
