My brother, who lives in South Bend, Indiana, told me today that a Southwest flight diverted to South Bend Regional Airport (SBN) early this evening en route from Raleigh/Duram (RDU) to Chicago Midway (MDW). Apparently according to local news the flight-deck was filling with smoke and the pilots reported they needed to land immediately and that their eyes were stinging and irritated. Southwest apparently flew another 737 into SBN to ferry the stranded passengers (whom had to wait aboard their original aircraft until a storm passed as SBN does not have jetway capabilities) to Midway, a 20 minute flight from SBN. An interesting note is that one passenger was actually destined for SBN, planning to connect to Chicago Express/ATA Connection at Midway! The authorities allowed him to deplane and go home, rather than having to fly to Midway. Pretty interesting story, ay!?

The story that Vanguard told is 99% true.. I was at work tonight and from my understanding there was a smell of smoke both in the cockpit and cabin.. and as a precaution they landed at the nearest suitable airport.. They were over FWA at the time.
We did ferry another aircraft out from MDW, but we had to wait for severe storms to move through before we could transfer the Customers to the other aircraft. And yes, there was a guy who was destined for SBN.. we let him hop off there with his bag.. I wonder if he'll get a refund on his ticket with C8 ??
Maintain 2300 until Boiler, cleared for the VOR-A approach, report BATLE inbound..

Yes, SBN does have ONE jetway, but I didn't bother saying so because I thought it would take too long to explain clearly why it is of no use when you have at least two 737's...so obviously the passengers would get rained on either deplaning or boarding the other jet, depending on which one is at the jetway (see my drift?) And BTW the jetway is at C-12.

South Bend has no B concourse. A and C. US Airways Express never even uses the jetway it uses the tarmac door, Delta uses it for one of their overnight flights, and I believe Northwest Airlink uses theirs.

So, even if there was just one jetway, this still could of gotten done. The smoking cockpit A/C could pull up to the jetway and let the passengers off into the terminal. Then the A/C could be pushed out. The new or ferried 737 could then pull up to the jetway and have the passengers reloaded.
It is worth the convienance of the passengers in my opinion!
