I would like to understand the difference and how aircraft manufactures designate the "sub" type of a paticular series. For example UA 747-422, LH 747-430 and AC 747-433 are all of 747-400 series, but what do the second and third digists (after - ) mean? I know they probably related to engine choices but how exactly are they assigned? sometimes a fourth letter such as F and M are added. I guess they mean freight and mixed. But are there any other sub categories? Is there such a database for quick look-up?

Many thanks in advance.

At Boeing this is the customer code. 22 for UAL, 30 for LH and so on.
Airbus uses the codes for configurations, thus they have less, I think mainly at Airbus it gives info about the used engines.

Sometimes, that puzzled me before, You find a 747-230 with a carrier like Air Atlanta or so, that is second hand market metal...

The second and third digits are simply Boeing customer codes...So the customer code for UA is 22. If you look the other aircraft they fly should be the same

757-222
777-222
747-222
