DL's Transatlantic Service

Hi!

I am looking to flying to the US in December and since Delta is offering the cheapest rates at the moment and my Fréquence Plus Blue status needs a brush up.  Big grin
Anyway, I have taken Delta over the pond numerous times in the early 90's but haven't had the pleasure since. And when I took them on twelve domestic segments this year I was surprised that they still had decent service.
My flight would be CDG-CVG, thus a 767-300ER and sadly not AF Airbus...
 Sad

I am getting off track a little. So how is their service on long-hauls nowadays? Which US airline can it be compared to?

Thanks a lot.

On the way back I'll get the AF 777-300ER, which is 50% of the reason why I am going.

I recently flew Air France BOS-CDG and Delta CDG-CVG. Here is what I can tell you about Delta:

1. Check-in is with Air France, so no difference there.

2. Security is much more intrusive on Delta... a more detailed interview, many passengers have a detailed frisking (combing through your hair, hands on your crotch, etc.)

3. Food was actually pretty good on Delta. The bread was awful, but everything else was surprisingly edible.

4. Delta charges for wine. The wine isn't bad, but you have to pay for it.

5. The crew were nowhere near as friendly as the cabin crew on Air France. BUT... they were professional, organized, and helpful if asked.

6. Delta's 767s do not have in-seat video in economy class. This is only available on Delta's 777s or on Air France.

7. Seat comfort--in my opinion--is identical.

8. Immigration, Customs, agricultural inspection, and mandatory TSA security for arriving passengers in Cincinnati tends to be far lengthier and intrusive than in larger US Airports (JFK, Newark, Atlanta, and others.) I avoid international arrivals into Cincinnati. It's pretty awful.

I would agree with MATs on his statements - I flew CDG-BOS AF and JFK-NCE DL - DL is not nearly as good as AF, mostly due to their antiquated 763's, which are looking very sad and ropey these days. IFE is very poor as well, not just the lack of PTV, content is pretty mediocre. Food not so very brilliant either, but it was OK. Charging for alcohol upset quite a few AF codeshare pax around me, who had come across on AF metal and had got it for free.

I don't know on how many trips you guys are basing your opinions. but having flown a number of segments last year on DL and AF between the US/Canada and CDG, I have not much good to say about AF. DL is OK, you get transported, fed, left alone, and not irritated or insulted. On AF you only get the first 3.

I think when comparing a Delta 777 flight to Europe, with an Air France 777 flight to Europe I would have to agree with Delta-flyer and say that Delta is definitely better. I don't know what is so great about Air France, or at least I do not see it.

I totally agree with Mats.
Last April I flew CDG-CVG on AF A332 and I returned on a DL B763.
The seat was more comfortable on the Airbus than the old seat on the Boeing BUT legroom was better on the Boeing because it lacks the IFE box on the floor under the seat in front of you. I had a window seat by the way. I don´t care so much about service and catering as long as the FA are efficient and not too rude.

Arriving at CVG was horrible. It was certainly not the first time I had the pleasure to experience the warm welcome from immigration and Customs at a US airport, but still I was petrified! I was off the plane very quickly, knowing that I wanted to be in front of the line at immigration. However, it took me over one and a half hours from disembarking to finally walking out the terminal... OH MY GOD, this NEVER again!

Well, just my experience...

I say always go with the Euro airline when travelling across the pond. More professional, better service, free drinks! I mean it drives me insane American carriers charge for drinks- especially beer and wine. I never flew DL international, have flown them Domestic. My Delta international experience was when I used to non-rev on SR and they had the codeshare. The DL FA's always looked terrible and sounded completely unprofessional when compared to the SR crew. And please god, no more Bush-Cheney! I like my civil liberties- or whats left of them.

I think DL service is great domestic because the FA do leave you alone. I think that the best American international airline is Continental. I flew NRT-TPA and the service was great.

Well the way it looks I can actually avoid CVG (as the airport of immigration) and will only have to fly DL on the way back to Europe, which is fine since I'll want to sleep anyway.
I am not sure if I am not too cheap to pay the extra 28€ to fly AF's 777-300ER twice.

Flying into the US from a foreign country SUCKS even if you are a US citizen.........prepare to be treated like a criminal. I have had the lovely US Immigration exp at the following airports and it always sucks: ATL, EWR, JFK, YYZ(yes, Canada), PDX, LAX, CVG.........so no matter who you fly, expect the worse and alot of wasted time entering the land of the free.

But this will be my first time coming to the US via JFK, so far I have only left the US that way. I'll take your word that it's not too bad since I'll only have two hours to get my connecting flight.

I travel internationally quite often, and for some reason I never really get hassled by INS or Customs. Why is that? I have flown in through JFK, EWR, DTW, IAH, IAD, ATL, BOS, and MEM. Not once have I ever been hassled by a Customs agent or INS agent; not saying that I haven't been asked twenty question. Most of the time it is something like: "Thank you Miss Bell, welcome home."

What exactly is it? Why are some apparently hassled so much, and others are not. Coming to the UK, I get twenty questions as well - everything. Coming to Germany, I get questions as well - sometimes, but have been waved through on occasion, and even searched on another. So it's hit and miss for me.

Sorry, but that's bull. AF's777 have the PTVs and the champagne, so you WERE saying you prefer Airbus.

If you would read my whole post, I clearly stated that a major reason for even going is a 777, clearly a Boeing product. Kinda hard to say that I prefer Airbus so much...
I just said that it's a shame that AF doesn't send their A340's or even better A332's to CVG anymore, which I'd prefer due to PTV's, good food and free champagne (or any alcohlic beverage). And I am sure that DL also do not offer the free kit with ear plugs and what not.

if you like to have an A332/340 then fly to philadelphia with AF. I am taking that plane on the 4th of august to test out the new AF Business product.

I am Delta platinum and AF Frequence Rouge so i fly them both very often because i have no other choice to get to my destination. personally I prefer the Delta service and chairs compared to AF

AF has announced new business seats for 2 years now and they only have 2 or 3 routes in service. It just takes forever,what a disgrace!. Compared to the old ones i still prefer DL their businesselite seats way more over the 12 YEAR (anno 1992) old affaires seats of AF.

I only fly an airline for the seat because most carriers dont have true service anyway. DL has the best ice cream/ AF has the best cheesetray. all the rest is pretty much the same and dried out.

Economy seats are the same i am sure but if you truly take only AF for their shitty free champagne than you should perhaps check your airline ticket price. fly DL and buy your own bottle of Veuve and take it on the plane

Joleb, if you ever actually flew, you'd know that you're not allowed to consume alcohol on board that has not been served to you by cabin crew - this is universal. If the crew catch you, they'll confiscate the bottle.
