I don't know if you have notice, but if you haven't seen them yet, Boeing's advertisement for the Dreamliner is all over A.net's website. I just finally decided to click on it, and discovered a newly re-design "newairplane" website, a different one. It also mentions the Farnborough Air Show, and features the B717 as well. Well, that's it... Thought it might interest people dont like to click on ads.

What does 7E7-8 mean exactly? It's mentioned a few times that some customers placed orders for the 7E7-8. I do like the customers page. I find it interesting that a small 8 airplane company becomes the 3rd launch customer for the 7E7; Blue Panorama. Good for them. A heck of a lot of confidence in the future for such a small company if you ask me; a lot can happen in five years...

Because I don't really plan on buying a 7E7 right now personnally. Not even a 717...

Or is it just Boeing kindly paying up for an ad so we aviation nuts can know more?

It is a nice approach anyway, it makes me feel like they want to get closer to the general public. Now Airbus would simply not do that yet. They have always been light years away in terms of advertising and getting the average person to know the company better. Too bad.

7E7 has several versions, like -3, -8, -9, which differ in range and payload / MTOW, afaik.

It is pretty much like with the 340, the 300 is standard, the 500 long range, the 600 is biiig...

It is to determine the size of the ordered aircraft. Some carriers need high payload on short routes, like charter airlines oprating 767 on short hops, others need smaller cabin with higher range, for example in transatlantic P2P system.

BTW, I am member of the Boeing World Design Team... You too? Sign up and we can all tell our grandchildren, that we helpet to design this plane!  Big grin

The 7E7-8 carries around 250 passengers in a 2 or 3 class configuration. It is the long haul version of the B7E7

The 7E7-9 is the high density version. It will carry around 300 passengers in a 3 class configuration

The 7E7-3 is the short haul version and will carry around 200-250 passengers

It's rumored that Boeing is going with -8 because this variant has 8,500 nautical miles of range. The -9 will only have 8,300 nautical miles of range, but it will be much larger, seating maybe 40 more passengers. The -3 will be the exact same size as the -8, but will be designed to fly around 3,500 nautical miles.

They have always been light years away in terms of advertising and getting the average person to know the company better. Too bad.

Their's a big difference between knowing a company exist, and knowing about the company. I'd say more people know of Boeing, simply because of the legendary 747, perhaps the only airplane that has mass recognition, something the A380 will not gain over night.

I've said this before, but any time you see "Airbus" and "marketing" together, take it with a Dead Sea of salt.

It is what I meant, really. Airbus should really get on advertising themselves a little better to the public so they get more recognition, and try to catch up with Boeing's years of advance. When an airplane is boarded in Europe, most non-aviation-fans passengers think they are boarding a Boeing, no matter the a/c...

A bit of advertising on the net, like this one on the right, would help them, I think.

Actually, Airbus marketed itself pretty good and quite many people and newspapers (not freaks like us) think, the 340 is far far far far superior to any Boeing model. Many members of a.net think that crap too, actually, but the truth is, Airbus did a better marketing so far, marketed itself as a very progressive company, whereas many people do not recognize the improvements Boeing made over the years, it just was not really necessary to come along with really new models, they were doing fine.

There are a few that at least come close to being important and influential. For the most part, we all know who they are. There are even more on USaviation.com and other "upmarket" sites. Some airline employees who arn't "big shots" now might be in the future, remember, this plane will be in production for a long time. Also, many add agencies are not going to look carefully at exactly what crowd an aviation site attracts. To an add exec unfamiliar with aviation sites, we might look like just as good a bet as USaviation.com or even AWST's site. My guess is they look at traffic figures alone and buy on that basis, hoping to catch the big fish by using a big net.

My guess is most of this public advertising is for four purposes....

1. To reach stockholders. The market is obsessed with short term profit and hates long term R&D. Boeing is trying to educate its stockholders about the importance of this investment.

2. On the net particularly, to influence lower level employees like pilots or mechanics. This does make a difference in some airlines. Employees often have opportunities to make prospective purchases look good or bad by evaluations, cost estimates, surveys, etc.

3. To create some passenger preference for the new plane. This did help the 777 for a while after its launch. Most people don't care which plane they are on but the few who do can influence margins.

4. To indirectly influence airports and government bodies in favor of the plane. Boeing has to deal with a lot of these in certification, etc.

IN SHORT....General good will toward a good product can do a great deal to "butter up" not only potential customers, but all the constituencies a company has to satisfy. This includes not only airline big shots but also lower level airline employees, taxpayers and voters, and stockholders. These people are often more powerful than they think they are.

The plane is revolutionary in many ways and if Boeing can achieve what they say they can then Airbus will be in big trouble. The market for 767 size aircraft is much bigger than the A380 fleet. Airbus' current competition to the 7E7 really can't compare and Airbus' claim that they will just "add bleedless engines and achieve the same thing" is ridiculous. I like Airbus' aircraft. But to call the 7E7 just another typical airplane is just plain wrong.

Surely they mean a greater cabin pressure??

Boeing, has said, that they want the 7E7 to be recognized in much the same way that the 747 is.


To DO that you have to connect with ordinary people. Hence the ads. However, there's another factor here: The World Design Team. I'm a member as well, charter since almost the beginning when the "Dreamliner" name had just barely won the worldwide poll.

the World Design Team covers a broad spectrum of people and to get sign-ups for that, you need to advertise as well. Get more sign-ups, you get more potential answers to polls, which play a very important part in construction.

I believe it was a poll for WDT that ended up determining that the WINDOWS on the 7E7 would be larger. The WDT is important, so why not advertise to get more members?


That said, the 7E7, since the tail revision, has grown on me immensely. I didnt care for it at first but now, that is one sexy beast. I cannot wait for its arrival.

Went to the site and looked at the 717 proven performer promotion. I thought it was cool what about you. I must say i really miss the fish tail on the 7e7 the standard one looks so so mondane.

Rupenz - I think Boeing has the least to worry these days when it comes to aircraft quality and let me say performance too... but your absolutely correct it's a mistake and that the young girl in Marketing in Chicago didn't do their QA properly.

As was said, the 7E7 livery is the new livery for all Boeing prototypes. They have a picture of the whole fleet in the paint.



The 747 in particular looks way more modern this way.
