Greetings...
Around 11:45am this morning, Lear 55 N55LR (don't quote me, but that's what I could best get out of the picture) was landing at FXE during a thunderstorm, slid off the runway, and sheared both main gears off. The Lear 55 ended up in a sand dune near some shrubs. No injuries reported from what I've read, but the airport remains closed as of 2pm.
Not much traffic due in so FLL, though busy with thunderstorms nearby anyway, isn't too heavily impacted.

Update on the reg...N55LF, cn 55-112, based at FXE in fact. Pilots uninjured, but the airport remains closed until likely tomorrow morning, according to ATC telecons (as of 5pm EDT).

I can see FXE from my office window. The weather was horrid today here in Fort Lauderdale. They have been working on the main runway all week. Perhaps the unfamiliarity of the other runway coupled with the weather played a part in the incident?

Also - can you tell me anything about the 737-200 that is parked at FXE in the eastern area of the airport. How come this airport gets Continental Express/Gulfstream Int'l B1900s in here with company livery every now and again....thanks ~ DAN

Gulfstream academy have their HQ at FXE. All the rich boys who want to pay for 250 hours of flying an airliner like to come here The reason you see the 1900's at FXE is they often do base training there or at PBI.

I thought I remembered something about the main runway being closed and that the other one, 13-31, was the primary runway in use, which is a bit shorter. I don't think unfamiliarity with the runway was the issue here as the plane was based at FXE.
Weather, winds, visibility, possible hydroplane if the runway wasn't grooved (I don't know this for a fact, just an observation) could all be contributing to the incident.
