At lunchtime today Qantas' 744ER Wunala Dreaming arrived at London Heathrow Airport, its currently sitting on a remote stand nr BA technical block at the moment, it wont be going out til at least 10:30 tonight, so plenty of times for its fans to get there and get some pics!

Looks lovely seeing it up close for real!

Ah damn. The only plane I still have to see, and now it's in LHR. Why can't it be there when I'm there as well?

Well, anyway, thanks to you many others will get to see her, so thanks for that! I'd better start booking my ticket to SYD or LAX huh?  Laugh out loud

Isn't that an LAX plane? or does it come to the UK now?

The ERs show up occasionally at LHR, probably something to do with Qantas scheduling maintenance on the fleet. It is winter over there at the moment too.

ER's come into LHR all the time seen at least 3 this week, but never seen VH-OEJ aka Wunala come into LHR, I always thought it was purely an LAX a/c, hopefully see more of this in the future!

From what i've heard, soon enough the only Qantas 74's to be seen at LHR will be the ER's, so there'll be plenty of opportunity to see Wunala there in the future, i'm sure.

Cheers,

Jeff

WHAT JeffDCA???

If true this would be very suprising, because:

1) With 3 daily services there are simply not enough B744ER's (pax) in existance to cover them. There are only 6, and each daily Oz-UK service requires 3 aircraft, so thats 9 aircraft now and 12 next year if 4 daily goes ahead. (Which seems likely, but who knows?)

2) The ER's were purchased specifically for MEL-LAX & SYD-LAX services which have longer sector lenghts than Oz-UK and hence utilise the greater weights available with these aircraft. While they have shown up in LHR & HKG (& AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA?) before it has not been often and generally has been for one off scheduling reasons. A wholesale shift to the Kangaroo route seems unlikely.
You might see more of them during your summer as the head winds across the Pacific die down a bit during the northern summer, making the extra weight not quite as critical then, as compared to the rest of the year.

Any more info would be appreciated.

Just information i've heard on the grapevine, whether it actually happens is another matter, but i've heard constant rumours about Qantas expanding on LHR and LAX, as they're the big money makers for them, like LHR-JFK is for BA, for example.

Cheers,

Jeff

OEJ has recently been fitted with skybeds that's why its in LHR.

LHR spotters should see it more over the next few weeks/months at least.

All 3 class 744s will have the same config which means all 3 class 744s can serve any route including ERs to LHR more often.

This makes it much easier for QF.

The original non-ER Wunala used to come to LHR regularly, it used to park up by the BA shorthaul hangars during the day.

Yep but now 1 QF and 1 SAA get parked over on the BA longhaul maintenance area every day.I think this is the 3rd visit for -OEJ now at LHR.
