I am just curious, what is their current 777 fleet, and do they have more 777s on order?
Also, is there an update with the rumor that they are bringing back their MD-11s?

Will-
Current fleet is 10 777-243ER's on the roster (6 owned, 4 leased). There's talk of converting some additional options to firm order, potentially including 777-343ER's. Their flights to JFK and NRT are constantly 100% full...
Currently 777's fly from MXP/FCO to the following destinations:
JFK/EWR/KIX/NRT/EZE/GRU and MIA (alternating with 763's).
5 MD11 Combi's are scheduled to be back on the roster in March '05 and will fly to ORD, DEL, and MIA (alternating with 777's).
Their 763 fleet is about to undergo refurbishment - with interiors similar to 777's being installed and IFE in every seat. Additionally, rumour has it they've just ordered (through ILFC) 4 additional 763ER's.
Next year, in addition to LAX, they're starting service to Shanghai.

One last question, does ILFC already have the four planes, or do they have to be ordered from Boeing?

Thanks for the info Alitalia744.
While I think LAX is a logical choice for Alitalia, I've heard it so many times, I won't believe till you can book it. Though no doubt it makes perfect sense.
With regards to MIA, we are currently a 763 service. The 772 returns for the peak season, and is currently scheduled to operate MIA-MXP 29Oct04 through 31May05.

Klik,
They're expanding into places that will guarantee them profits, that will enable them to pay back their loan, as they'll be making money. If they use (part of) the money from the loan to lease/ buy B777-300ERs, they can most definitely fill the seats to at least a couple of destinations, say JFK, NRT, and MIA (in the winter). And more seats= more profit= more $ for Alitalia. I wish them the best of luck with their expansion, with hopes that they keep adding new aircraft and still make loads of cash !

Hey
I dont know if AZ would start services to PHL because they already have a strong relation with DL they would probaly just code share flights there then doing a direct service. I find it funny that AZ doesnt opperate ATL.
Also does anyone no if AZs MD-11s will be installed with this new interior along with the 767?? I personally think that AZ should purchase some 764s and maybe one or two 773Ers

The 767s and 330s do not make sense, and the same with the 764s, 777s, and MD-11s. However, since we are on the topic of dream fleets, how about adding some 744s?

I am very very happy to read this one, I remember when AZ flew to LAX using B747 and this was not long ago.... I always wondered the reason why this service was cancelled, perhaps because of DL alliance. I knew load factor was very good and also cargo wasn't bad, in fact sometimes AZ used MD-11 Combi for this route and actually there is a code-sharing flight operated by Cargolux via LUX, so I believe that this is the logical conclusion.

IDISA-
Benvenuti! Lavori per Alitalia? E-mail me sometime. I just got back from Italy and took IDISO "Positano."
Anyway, loads on the LAX flight were decent, and cargo was good. The problem was after 9/11, pax declined and AZ was faced with a shortage of aircraft. I'm surprised they started IAD before LAX tho...

AZ + LAX = good stuff!!!
Regarding the fleet, AZ should concentrate on the type of aircraft they already operate.
I can see AZ ordering the 7E7 to replace the 767 in the coming years - if they don't liquidate in the meantime - but they will have to “clean up to the house” before they do so!!!
It's becoming an interesting saga!

I'm not so optimistic concerning AZ's future. So I'm not sure that AZ really will start this route. JUN 05 is too far and there are a lot of problems to resolve before wishing to start new routes!

I read an article yesterday which quoted Cimoli as saying "1 in 5 employees is redundant"
I think he's on the right track, but I'm not sure how layoffs will fly with Italians...hopefully they'll realize there's jobs elsewhere and let AZ live.

I think that one of the condition posed by EU for the aproval of the state loan is not to expand fleet (using state money to rise fleet is against free market in EU). For tht reason I think that further AC order (like 777 300 er or 764) to expand long haul fleet are not possible in the future.
Most probably AZ MD11 will be back in operational fleet to fill some route without new AC.
It cold be very expansive: I''ve red that there aren't enough crew that have manteined the authorization to fly on these aircraft. Also the AC need some check to obtain the operational status.
