NW A330--SEA-NRT!

I read somewhere on this site that the first rev flight for the NW A332 will be from SEA to NRT sometime in the end of July. Is this a permanent switch from the 742 operating the route since time began? I thought SEA-AMS would see the A332 first. Can anyone confirm this? Will SEA-NRT ever switch to a 744? Any chance of re-starting SEA-KIX? Thanks!

The July 29th SEA-NRT flight is just a rev positioning flight for Tokyo-Seoul. To my knowledge SEA-AMS will not see a A332, but an A333 but not for some time. The new A332 are for Pacific flights only to start.

SEA-AMS will receive the 332. Its a long way for a 333 with PW4168As.

I don't want to get in an arguement, but nwa's website says the 333 can handle 5300 miles and the great circle mapper shows sea-ams 4900miles and 4300nm. Now granted this may not be efficent, but why wouldn't the 333 be able to due SEA-AMS? Is using an aircraft (ex 332) with better range work better for airlines?

Going from a 742 to a 342 is pretty big reduction in size. Is the NRT - SEA flight posting low loads? One would think if the flight was full, NW would put a 744 to replace the retiring 742.

The A330-300 configured in NW's configuration probably is capable of 5300 nm with pax and bags, ISA, and no wind. I'd also be surprised if the NWA.com numbers are right, since NW press releases say the A330-200s they ordered can only do 5400 nm out of the 332's max of 6650.

If NW wants to haul a lot of cargo, which NW does like to do, they'll get less than that.

There's no reason the 333 couldn't do it, I'm sure it could. But the 332 could certainly do it better.

All that aside, everything I've heard here, and from those no longer with us, is that the route will get the 332.

In reality SEA-AMS(4873) is about 100 miles longer than SEA-NRT (4776), so it is not all about range.

SEA-NRT is not a low yielding market. There is a fair amount of business travel between the two cities. The reason for the capacity reduction is that NW started PDX-NRT, which took a lot of passengers off of the SEA-NRT flight due to fewer connecting passengers from Oregon. Thus the lower amount of connecting passengers causes them to need fewer seats and reduce capacity. Also they compete directly with UA on the route operating the 777.

The DL cancellation has been discussed here before. DL was unable to make the PDX flights work due to their minimal presence in Asia and the difficulty of operating out of PDX at the time. There are all sorts of rumors on how bad PDX officials and immigration was for DL. NW has the benefit of a large hub at NRT, which can connect passengers to all over Asia.

Also NW has operated SEA-KIX before. In 1995 they inaugurated service for the first time. They wanted to operate the route with a continuation to Jakarta Indonesia, but the Japanese government would not grant 5th freedom rights beyond KIX to central Asia. They eventually cut the route in September of 2001 due to poor economic performance, and the cutback of services out of KIX.
