Talks Between F9 And DIA Stop

F9 and DIA are unable to agree on price for Concourse A expansion. F9 missed the deadline to have gates expanded by 2005. F9 will have to ask UA to continue leasing gates on A to F9 in order to keep all flights out of A.

With TED I don't think that UA is going to be willing to do this. They want all the TED flights off of A.....


DENVER - Talks between Frontier Airlines and Denver International Airport have come to a stand still.

The Denver-based carrier needs more room, and is trying to expand Concourse A.

But airline officials, airport executives and the contractors handling the expansion project have been unable to agree on a price.

Airport spokesman Chuck Cannon says Frontier missed an April deadline to begin construction, which would have new gates built by the end of October 2005.

The delay could force Frontier to ask its rival -- United Airlines -- to change a gate use agreement reached last year.

United relinquished two of its eight Concourse A gates for Frontier to use until the end of October 2005, when the concourse expansion was expected to be completed.

A United spokesman says the airline is willing to work with Frontier, and indicated Frontier might get more time to compete the expansion project.

Among other differences it says that the talks are continuing.

Both agree that UAL is "willing to work with Frontier", and th RMN version explains why.

From another source there is another piece of information - that it was changes requested by Frontier that pushed the price up. Sounds me to like a negotiating - or delaying - tactic.

I agree MARINER I don't think that F9 will have any trouble getting everything done in a timely manner. This is pretty standard for negotiations. I think DIA should just expand C and put CO out there. A could be F9 and INTL. only. B will soon be able to handle all of TED and with the new RJ jet center off of A that will save a lot of room. Like I said I don't think that this is a big crack in the road and I think all will end up fine for F9

Under the original plan - announced right at the end of Mayor Webb's administration - ten extra gates were going to cost $300 million.

I guess $77 million for six gates could be called a bargain.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I would imagine that for 6 gates $77mil. is not too far off. If you have ever been to DIA you will notice that the concourses are very wide and are about 3 stories high. If they are adding on im sure they will have to add additional moving walkways and all the passenger comforts that the rest of the concourse has. The price to build 6 gates at DIA is probably the same as 12 somewhere else.

Wouldn't it make sense to build more that just 6 gates? I realize the cost involved, but every time they add gates it will involve blowing out the existing end wall and building a new one further down. Wouldn't that represent a big end of the cost anyway? By the time this project is completed, 4 gates wont be enough and they will have to tear down that wall again and move it further west.

just my 2 cents as a taxpayer.

Frontier needs to find another city to start a "hub" operation..or at east a focus city...Northwest is already hitting on IND so that is not that good of a possibility...i would say Kansas City would be a decent hub or even St. Louis.

Kansas City and St Louis are both too close to DEN. I think that when they look east it will be more on the coast or even in FL to support the Caribbean routes that they will have soon.

I agree with you Qucikmover, They should just make a big expansion project. The should expand C and move everyone out there!

EDIT: I will just edit this in, under my post Mariner makes a very good point, I have never thought of it that way.....

It could be argued that Frontier is in the process of doing that - at Cancun.

Once services from Nashville and Austin start, Cancun will have more Frontier destinations than their designated focus city, LAX. And if - stress "if" - they get the rights to STL/CUN, Frontier will have as many routes to Cancun as any US airline (AA has the most with six).

Cancun can never be a true focus city, of course, because I doubt Mexico would ever allow Frontier to have onward rights.

But is is interesting. And different.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Concourse A has a major advantage over C, being that you can walk to A using the SkyBridge which has a separate security checkpoint not linked with North/South checkpoints for the train.
